Forget the Vipers, Raiders and Stingarees.
If today's Victoria students have a say in the matter, the city's two new high schools will leave the past behind.
Students in the Victoria school district recently wrote their suggestions for new mascot names and colors.
Memorial High School sophomore Savanna Batson said old mascots like the Vipers, Raiders and Stingarees didn't even cross her mind when she wrote down her suggestion.
"That's the past. I say let it die," Savanna said. "I think something like the tigers would be good because it signifies strength."
Students submitted more than 24,000 slips of paper with names of mascots and colors to Nancy McCord, assistant superintendent of secondary schools for the district.
Last week, the Student Leadership Committee, consisting of students in grades 7 to 12, sorted through the suggestions for each school.
"We decided that we don't want any of the past mascots for the new schools," MHS junior Preston Turner said.
He is one of the 45 members of the committee, which was broken into groups. Each group was given color and mascot suggestions pertaining to one school.
"We broke the high school suggestions into four groups," McCord said. "Two groups for the east and two for the west."
The groups were given two hours March 25 to sort through the slips. However, some of the groups did not finish because there were so many slips. They will be meeting again today.
Many of the suggestions were for tigers, wolves, pandas and some for the old mascots.
"We took out the old mascots because we want something new," said Marina Rios, MHS-Stroman freshman.
The students immediately threw away mascots of other schools in the district like panthers and sharks, Marina said. The students also removed suggestions that had only two or three votes or were ridiculous, Preston said.
"Some suggestions like the snails or the unicorns were taken out," Marina said. "People were just being silly."
The school board thought it would be a good idea to have the students who will be attending the new schools make suggestions for the mascots and colors, board president Ray Walden said.
"Having the students suggest mascots and colors is a great way of taking the process and putting it in the students' hands," Walden said.
However, the school board will have the final say in the colors and mascots chosen for each school.
The students were asked to list the first and second most popular suggestion of colors and mascots for each school. They also were asked to make a suggestion they liked as a group, McCord said.
"The majority of the suggestions for the east high school were tigers and wolves. Our group suggested the Titans," Marina said. "For colors we liked blue and black."
She said her group chose the Titans because it is different from other high schools. The other group for the Victoria East High School had the wolves and longhorns as the most suggested and announced the stallions as their choice. For colors, they like orange and blue. Other popular colors were red and black, and blue and black.
Popular suggestions for Victoria West High School were warriors and wolves. The groups chose the wolverines. Suggested colors were red, black and silver; and black, red and white.

I didn't go to school here, but I think they need to cut the crap and bring back the Stingarees and Raiders. Sux they took them away in the first place. Stingarees was the best mascot name in Texas I thought.
April 2, 2009 at 7:08 p.m.How will they come about finding new mascot names? Ooo.. I know I know.... lets poll the public and find out there interests so that they would be led to believe that we "support" their opinions than we will just toss them out and go with whatever we want to since we are the school board and have the power to make decisions based on our own low brained ideas!!!! What a waste of our trees giving the students paper to write down there thoughts on a mascot, WHY so the SB can turn around and come up with CRAP again! I try to be a positive person but this whole " government" knows best idea is really making me MAD!!!! I sincerely hope that next time the school board elections come about we take out the ones who are responsible for making us the Laughing stock of south texas!!!!!
April 1, 2009 at 1:04 p.m.Your quote has my attention…"That's the past. I say let it die," Savanna said.
In the heart of Victoria you’ll find a “mighty-might” Stingray, Vipers thru- n- thru, and a Raider who will never die! These mascots once housed here and left memories to be remembered. The mascots and their importance should be respected by all Victorian’s. Children don't understand the importance this has on a community. Children don’t know what they want, any different, than some of you. Children don’t understand the importance of a legacy and they don’t understand the importance of a mascot! They’re too young to understanding these miles stone because they have not yet, created them.
April 1, 2009 at 12:47 p.m.Grackles, Web Worms, Termites, Illegal Invaders
April 1, 2009 at 12:43 p.m.I think the Board has already decided the names and colors.
April 1, 2009 at 12:34 p.m.Add a little literary flare to Victoria West and Victoria East -
April 1, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.the Jets and the Sharks ...
so what will happen to the "Victoriadores?"
Bet they will be at the West campus.
West will be VHS and East will be Stroman, all over again.
Look at the demographics that make up the attendance zones.
Frustrating! And another thing, the new ballpark near the community center.... no trees!!!!!!! What was wrong with investing the money to the old shaded park downtown?!!!
April 1, 2009 at 12:02 p.m.I guess the same logic comes from the idea that medians at here and over there, random were a good idea too.
its funny how they say "in visd you count" cause you really dont...maybe if they would have left things the way they were we really wouldnt have to be doing any of this...they already got rid of everyones alma mater
April 1, 2009 at 11:39 a.m.All the mascots and colors listed above are suggestions. The students were not voting on what the new mascots and colors will be, they were making suggestions. Also, the board will meet Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the administration building to hear the suggestions and pick mascots and colors. Architects need the colors and mascots asap.
April 1, 2009 at 11:22 a.m.Ok, so let's create new mascots, but stick with the same colors?! What's that about? The suggestions are about as bland as the new school names! Victoria West and Victoria East?! Very original.
Ok, so drop the old mascots, Vipers were pretty lame, but I thought Stingarees (not biased either) was fitting seeing as we are near the coast. Let's give the school mascot some meaning, something reflects aspects of our city.
Longhorns, Brahmans, Conquistadors, Matadors, Cardinals, Indians, Texans, Rosebuds, are some suggestions.
But in the end, VISD already has the mascots picked, how sweet of them to let the students "choose."
April 1, 2009 at 11:15 a.m.Oilers would be awesome!
April 1, 2009 at 11:05 a.m.HAWKS or perhaps the flounders
April 1, 2009 at 10:56 a.m.Why don't they name them what is common around here. I have 2 names that pop up,
Oilers- Cool derrick on the helmet
April 1, 2009 at 10:42 a.m.Cowboys- Edna has that one though
I could live with the Wolverines, and Titans. I think thoses are good mascots. As far as the colors: Wolverines: Black, Silver and Red. Titans: Black Orange and White....
April 1, 2009 at 9:06 a.m.Well, it looks like the dumped the old mascots but they are picking similar colors from VHS and Stroman.
East wants Blue & Black...West wants Red, white, black...
April 1, 2009 at 7:49 a.m.LittleBlueBook, I started laughing when I saw PANDAS hahaha
April 1, 2009 at 7:48 a.m.Pansies
March 31, 2009 at 7:08 p.m.Roughneckz
March 31, 2009 at 7:08 p.m.Wolverines? Why not Chupacabras? The T-shirt sales alone would bring in a fortune! Let's go Choops! Let's go Choops!
March 31, 2009 at 7:01 p.m.'WOLVERIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
March 31, 2009 at 6:44 p.m.Get off the P.C. Wussie names and come up with real fighting team names. I tell you, if Victoria is ever going to produce winning teams we need to shed these weenie names. Let out weenies in city government duke it out in court.
Victoria, step up to the plate and name out teams from the following:
March 31, 2009 at 6:39 p.m.Raiders
Confederates
Redskins
Vikings
Buccaneers
Indians
Braves
Even the Fighting Whities beats the Vipers
New Braunfels HS are the Unicorns & their colors are purple & white...no kidding.
