The charge
Michael Maples is charged with lying about his criminal history when he was hired as Memorial High School's principal in 2007. He claimed on an application that he had never been convicted of a crime other than traffic offenses, although he had spent time in federal prison on theft and fraud charges.
A former principal accused of withholding his criminal history on his job application turned himself into the Victoria County Jail on Wednesday.
Michael James Maples, 45, was arrested on a warrant charging him with bond forfeiture. The original charges of forging documents to get property or credit valued between $20,00 and $100,000 stem from a September 2007 Victoria County grand jury indictment.
When he was hired as Memorial High School's principal in spring 2007, Maples filled out an application that asked if he had ever been convicted of a crime. Maples answered "No."
In fact, Maples served time in federal prison for theft and fraud charges while in the military.
"At this point, we're just waiting for the district attorney's office to contact us," Maples' lawyer, Todd DuPont said.
Maples missed a July 2008 court date because he was serving a federal prison term on unrelated charges, DuPont said. Maples pleaded guilty in federal court in January 2008 to stealing from an Oklahoma City school district he once worked for. That district also sued Maples in civil court.
No new court dates have been set in Maples' Victoria case.
Although Maples remained in jail Wednesday afternoon, DuPont expected him to post the $30,000 bail.

Maples owned up to and is paying the price for his mistake, which is ultimately what’s important for justice and the rule of law. When someone commits a crime and get's away with it, it sends the message that there are two sets of rules. "First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your brother's eye."
May 7, 2009 at 4:36 p.m.fatboy--I believe the folks in charge of keeping an eye on the funds would be the school board trustees.
Does knowing that help relieve any of your anxiety? It doesn't mine.

May 7, 2009 at 11:20 a.m.What you don't see with your eyes, don't witness with your mouth.
May 7, 2009 at 10:28 a.m.Oh, and I also want to challenge Mr. Tyler:
You and your supporters continually state that you want to prove no one is above the law -- Dr. Maples broke the law and committed a felony here in your jurisdiction. The same offense as the city officials were indicted for, which you persued with the tenacity of a pit bull -- Prove to me, and the other citizens of Victoria County, that NO ONE is above the law and prosecute Dr. Maples to the fullest extent. His purgery offense was NOT a victimless crime. Mr. Tyler, you have a chance to redeem yourself here. Prove to the doubters and anti-DA office that you are serious about prosecuting ALL offenders.
May 7, 2009 at 9:18 a.m.1. Mr. Crockett is doing a great job, and deserves the position of MHS principal.
2. Don Schulke should have NEVER been let go. ( I don't give a rat's behind what the "official VISD" story is, we are not as dumb as the BOE believes we are.)
3. Maples' is a career criminal because he keeps getting away with committing crimes. First the military, then Oklahoma City Schools -- this is his 3rd strike!
4. Vote Ross Mansker!!!
May 7, 2009 at 9:12 a.m."Maples missed a July 2008 court date because he was serving a federal prison term on unrelated charges, DuPont said."
This statement, to me, seems false --- I recall that Maples hearing was rescheduled due to the Ratcliffe case and the subsequent indictments of Ure, Armstrong & Company ---- The DA was a bit pre-occupied. Also, if the reason for bond forfeiture as stated in the article is true, it speaks volumes of Maples' attorney's ineptness.... He knew when Maples' prison term began, and knew when the Court hearing was supposed to be.... he didn't file a motion for continuance because??????????????
I am sure, by now, Dr. Maples' friends in high places have helped with his bond and he is out of Victoria County Jail --- but I want to know, if he was sentenanced to one year in prison, for his crimes in OKC, and that term began in June 2008, why is he back in Victoria in May 2008? Good behavior? When was he released?
I guess the biggest question I am going to have is this: Will Steven Tyler pursue the case against Dr. Maples with the same zeal as he pursued the the cases against Ure et al? (Read the bottom of the VISD application where it says: "Under penalty of perjury, I attest that the foregoing is ......" ) It's not apples and oranges, but apples and apples....
May 7, 2009 at 9:03 a.m.maybe Bob the Builder will give him some commasary money!
May 7, 2009 at 8:24 a.m.It's about freakin time. Maybe Bob the builder will go and see his friend at CO. jail.. (jk)
May 7, 2009 at 8:12 a.m.does zero tolerance apply here also?
Crockett is good the kids relate to him---lets make him Athletic Dir. and just let daddy Finley coach.
May 6, 2009 at 10:08 p.m.vote Ross mansker for dist. 4.
May 6, 2009 at 9:44 p.m.If he had put a military reference down on his application, a simple call to that would have brought up the red flag. Even if he didn't I bet he did put that he was prior military, VISD could have asked for his DD Form 214 and see what kind of discharge he got ( with serving time in the military he most likely at the lightest a general discharge).
May 6, 2009 at 9:36 p.m.Do not forget that this is the felon that Bob Moore brought with him from Oklahoma. One dollar background check.
Vote Ross Mansker for Place 4, VISD Board of Trustees.
