VANDERBILT - The Industrial school board has a new member after Saturday's election.
Industrial school district voters chose Missy Klimitchek on Saturday. She received the most votes from a field of six candidates vying for three at-large seats.
"I was real surprised to see that I did have the largest number of votes," Klimitchek said Monday of the 177 votes she received. "I hope I come there as a voice not only for the students and the parents but the educators, too."
Klimitchek taught in the Industrial school district for three years, worked as an administrator for Victoria College and earned a master's degree in education.
Klimitchek works as the curriculum and grant director of Ganado school district.
She has two boys, a freshman and sophomore, who have been students in Industrial since kindergarten, she said.
"This school district is important to our family, and I wanted the opportunity to offer what I can by serving," Klimitchek said. "I feel like the community knows that I know what it's like to be there down in the trenches with the teachers and the kids."
Incumbents Carl Allen and Tim Garcia were re-elected to fill the remaining open positions. Allen received 175 votes, and Garcia had 162.
Incumbent Larry Ellis received 140 votes, while challengers Tammy Gendke received 151 and Kevin Jay Gaspard received 109 votes.
The district's school board will meet at 8 p.m., Tuesday to canvass the votes. Industrial school district covers southern Jackson County and parts of Victoria County.
