CUERO - They say politics in Texas can be a full-contact sport. That saying proved true at the polls Saturday in Cuero.

City Secretary Lisa Moravitz claims 74-year-old Flo Miller assaulted her at the Cuero polling place.

Moravitz, who also serves as the city's election administrator, reported to Cuero police that she was assaulted about 12:30 p.m.

The assault was minor in nature but occurred while she was discharging her official duties, according to a Cuero Police Department news release.

"I strongly feel no matter who, when or why, if they have the gumption to hit me in the head in front of that many people, I have the right to press charges," Moravitz said.

The Cuero Fire Department served as the polling place Saturday. The city secretary said she tried to assist Miller with her ballot and at one point informed her that the Secretary of State had an 800 number if she had a complaint.

"Without hesitating, she open-handed hit me in the forehead, knocking my glasses crooked and mumbled something as I turned away from her. She then left the polling place. As to why - I have absolutely no idea. I don't even know her on a personal level," Moravitz said.

Miller's version is different, saying Moravitz tried to "grab her ballot," but denies hitting the city secretary.

"That's not true. That's crazy," Miller said. "I don't know why she's saying that. I don't hit people. I am a Christian."

After learning of the incident, police chief Chris Hernandez remained at the fire station until the poll closed at 7 p.m.

Hernandez said the matter has been referred to the municipal court for processing and possible charges.

During Saturday's election, three incumbents were voted off the Cuero City Council.

  • Just a quick side question CJ,

Is the site experiencing another bug today?

Quite a few of the comments on the list say "So and So said in (nothing there it's blank) ", said in what?, there is no way to see what thread the comment was posted to or how to get to it.

  • Don -In our User Policy, you will see this:

"Please be aware that we DO NOT review every contribution made on this Web site. More than likely, you will see user contributions before anyone on staff here does."

We don't have someone reading every comment that is posted. If you have a question on a post that was deleted you can email moderators@vicad.com, and as long as you tell us the story you commented on, or give us an idea of the date you posted the comment, it can be tracked down by the moderators. You don't have to send a copy of the comment.

We are working on a possible future enhancement that would automate this process of informing users when a comment was deleted and why, because as stated before, it is not always logistically possible to have someone send e-mails to everyone who had a commented deleted with an explanation. Hope that answers your questions. - CJ

  • cjcastillo,

If I understand what you're saying, I have to make copies of all of my posts, as well as note the topics they're on, so if I disagree or have a question, a 'moderator" will quote the reason a post was removed, right?

The next question is, does a moderator scan all the posts for rules being broken or do they wait until someone complains?

Just for fun, I scanned the last 300 posts and found only 3 posts had been removed. That’s a very small percentage (.003%) and doesn’t strike me as being too many to respond to – that’s just my opinion though. Oh well......

  • One of my posts from yesterday was deleted also and I asked why - I thoroughly checked my post to make sure it was not violating the Advocates rules but I guess by telling Ms. Moravitz to stop stirring the pot was a violation.

Anyway, my whole point is this - Ms. Moravitz came on here first and invited the public to take a look at the police report. To me, and this is strickly my opinion, it was like she was trying to prove she was right. I do not know Ms. Miller but I do know Ms. Moravitz. Just because you claim to be a Christian doesn't mean you're exempt from following the law and quoting the Bible and asking what would Jesus do doesn't make you better either. If she did assault Ms. Moravitz, then yes she deserves to go through the process of what comes next and take her punishment. None of us know if she apologized for hitting Ms. Moravitz or if she just apologized for the incident. We have to take Ms. Moravitz for her word that Ms. Miller apologized and that's where a lot of people have a problem. Again, like I said yesterday on my post that was removed, make better choices and treat people with respect - that goes to both Ms. Miller and Ms. Moravitz. I think Ms. Moravitz' previous behavior in other incidents are clouding people's judgements on this issue. Is that fair? Probably not. But I think my opinion would be changed if she had not come on here and berated others for their opinions. I know if I were in the right, I would not have dropped the charges and I definitely would not have come to a public forum begging people to read the report and then engaging in a negative manner once they dare to respond. Ms. Moravitz, I hope you do take the high road and not engage in this anymore and make better choices. Ms. Miller, I really hope you didn't pop her in the head and if you did, I'm sure you are grateful she dropped the charges.

  • DonMader and guest 12345 - Concerning our moderating comments, as you can see by our User Policy, we are promoting civility online. Here is a link to our online policy - http://www.victoriaadvocate.com/user-...

We respond when users report comments in violation of our policy. We do have many commenting on our site and many comments are reported and deleted, and for this reason we don't find it logistically possible to respond every time a comment gets deleted. However, people are welcome to contact our moderators with individual questions. You can send our team of moderators a question at this address: moderators@vicad.com

  • WELL Ms Moravitz didn' t lie obviously and Ms Miller did so why is everyone on Ms Moravitz!!!!!!!!!! Proclamation that "I'm a christian does not mean you are above sin PERIOD! Maybe you will call Ms Moravitz a trouble maker or whatever but in the black and white of this .............Flo you don't look so good and "Tyranny" is making you look worse..........Hope you two girls can be friends now.......

    May 14, 2009 at 12:37 p.m.
  • i want to know, first of all, does tyranny live in cuero? does tyranny know both these ladies and did tyranny see the incident happen?

if not, then i think tyranny needs to keep their mouth shut, period.

now if this had happened to me and if was posted in the newspaper, i KNOW i would want to see what people had to say about me too. so what if lmoravitz keeps looking at these ridiculous posts. it happened to her not to you so just let her be. and so what on the times she posted her blogs. how do you know if she was at work or not? she might have had the afternoon off. are you her keeper or what? that is no ones business but hers.

now as for the old lady, she should have NEVER placed her hands on anyone rather it was a blow, slap, swat or a pop. thats assault no matter what. an apology and asking to drop the charges ARE an omission of guilt no matter what anyone says.

  • Being a Christian didn't keep Karla Faye Tucker from being convicted and executed.

    May 14, 2009 at 11:24 a.m.
  • Thanks, Don Mader. Well put. I'd like to see something like that happen as well, if it's within the Advocate's means.

Aw, heck. I'd like to see it even if it was impractical. It'd make me feel better about my posting yesterday that was deleted. :)

    May 14, 2009 at 10:56 a.m.
  • Open letter to Chris Cobler:

    Mr. Cobler,

I apprecite the fact the the Advocate is trying to have posters maintain civililty in their comments. It could easily get out of hand otherwise.

I try to follow the rules but I admit, several times I was "over the top" in some of my posts and they probably needed to be to deleted. Several other times my remarks have been deleted and I truely didn't understand why.

When your employees are reviewing the posts on this site, it would be very helpful to all concerned, if, along with the notation that a comment had been deleted, the censor would also cite the rule that was broken. Better still, if they would copy the post that was deleted and the rule broken and email it to the poster using the forum email system it would help the poster understand which post and why the post was deleted. I've had some of my posts deleted the next day and if I've posted remarks on several different topics, I don't always remember what I said. I don't make copies of my posts and I guess most other people don't either.

If the goal is to make sure that posters stay within the rules, the above information would be very helpful in keeping oneself on the straight and narrow. Since it seems relatively few posts are deleted based on the overall volume, this shouldn't be too arduous or time consuming a task.

Your reaction to my suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Don Mader

  • Moral of the story: If you're old and a Christian you can pretty much get away with anything.

Tyranny said it himself/herself: "I shutter to think that we start pressing charges on our seniors."

Wow! Seniors can now do as they please. I can't wait to get old so that I can run around popping people in the head. FUN!

    May 14, 2009 at 10:40 a.m.
  • Ok. Can someone who read my posting on here yesterday tell me why the Advocate would say it violated terms and delete it? I was not trying to cause trouble, or being inflammatory in the slightest. I've seen many a poster on this site attacking others, and their comments have not been removed, even though it does violate the user policy.

I simply said that I didn't know if the user lmoravitz was actually the real Lisa Moravitz, since the postings by the user seemed silly to me. I did comment that if it was her, it was sad that she didn't edit her posts for mistakes very well. Many a person on this site has complained over others needing to use spell-check and other editing features.

Is that inflammatory? How does that violate the user policy? Does one just simply have to hit the "report a violation" button, and a comment is automatically removed? I wasn't trying to stir up the pot on here. I was simply trying to figure out why the user lmoravitz would seem to be trying to cause trouble for herself (or for an innocent person if user lmoravitz is not the real Lisa Moravitz from the story).

I am very sorry if this offended anyone (the real Lisa Moravitz included). I guess if this post gets deleted too, without a proper explanation (or cause), I'll have to start getting my news by word of mouth. I'm not sure I can stand to keep using the website, if I'm wrongly punished for using the comment portions of the website in a proper manner.

    May 14, 2009 at 10:11 a.m.
  • Moral to the story, in Cuero it's okay to assault a public servant, and by extension anyone else. In fact, in Cuero, you will probably become a local hero for smacking the town trouble maker everyone in that little town knows.

    May 14, 2009 at 9:35 a.m.
  • Next!!!!!!!!!!

    May 14, 2009 at 9:21 a.m.
  • Tyranny - If you were taking my cars keys; I would not hit you. I would call the police and let them handle it. How can you not see that physical violence is wrong period. Regardless of age or religious preference!!

Now if you want me to speculate on what I think happened...
I think the old christian lady got upset because Lisa was going out of her way trying to help her. The old lady (not wanting to deal with the reality she may need help) resorted to hitting Lisa.

That is how I see it.

    May 14, 2009 at 9:20 a.m.
  • She apologized.....she's guilty.

Tyranny is still defending her because she's a "little old lady" and a "Christian"

Christians never do anything wrong huh?

    May 14, 2009 at 8:03 a.m.
  • Flo's apology has more to do with making peace then being a omission of guilt. Stop hating on little old ladies.
    Warriorcrow is spot on.
@Hicktoria: no you are not right. If someone is already touching you (taking a ballot from your hand) you have the right to stop them. Just like if I was taking your car keys from your hand you would be well within your rights to refuse and resist me. Flo just didn't walk up to her and smack her in the head. You obvious don't understand the circumstances and your narrow view of civil liberties is breath taking. Enjoy your hypocrisy and "perfect" world view.

    May 14, 2009 at 7:27 a.m.
  • ok I have question for the bloggers since the lady is a christian and she wouldn't do this and doesn't know why the other lady is saying this then why apologize and ask for her to drop charges? (personally I'll be daMN$& if I ask someone to drop charges and apologize if I'm not guilty...........that makes the her look like a liar doesn't it????? Just asking I don't know either of them.

    May 13, 2009 at 9:26 p.m.
  • if it were not for the city officials, this city would be boring...what's next.

    May 13, 2009 at 9:25 p.m.
  • "I feel if the folks that slandered my name don't want to disclose true identities, their comments are insignificant."

Do you mean insignificant? No, there not. They are opinions and they can be expressed freely here or elsewhere. If you really thought they were insignificant, you wouldn't waste your time on here. You were the first person to post on this thread and continue to answer. You even stated in one of your posts here you wanted to hear what the public thought - well you got more than you bargained for. Why do you care what people think? If you're in the right, then you know you did nothing wrong and don't need to answer on a thread. You're going to have to have tougher skin than this to be the City Secretary-just let it roll off your back.

    May 13, 2009 at 8:54 p.m.
  • I notified Sonny Long today at 4:55 p.m. and it was posted on the blog this evening. My statement as to not reporting the facts was on the last article posted by the advocate as to being slapped in the face is incorrect, I was popped on the forehead as my statement reflects. Again, I am not instigating, I am answering a question.

    May 13, 2009 at 7:54 p.m.
  • Actually, you make our comments significant by responding.

    May 13, 2009 at 7:48 p.m.
  • lmoravitz-
Your first post on this thread was at 4:45 p.m., yesterday.
    Then at 11:05 a.m., today.
    Then at 12:02 p.m., today.
Then at 7:02 p. m., today, at which time you began to complain that the Advocate was not reporting all the facts.

Just exactly when did you agree to drop the charges, and when did you notify the Advocate? Did you expect that this story, and this thread would just vaporize once there was a new story?

As a part-time pot stirrer myself, I do recognize pot stirring when I see it, and that is what you are doing now.

Seems as though you would want this to just die down and quickly go away so that all can return to their regular duties. You're not exactly coming off as a victim here, not that you're not a victim, but if you're now looking for another 15 minutes of fame, I think your time is up!

    May 13, 2009 at 7:47 p.m.
  • I am not stirring the pot. I just get tired of the hate mail and phone calls. I want the Victoria Advocate to report all the facts and not just part of the facts. I appreciate your opinion, as I did not request any of this to be placed in the paper or a blog posted. I am tired of my name being slandered. I feel if the folks that slandered my name don't want to disclose true identities, their comments are insignificant.

    May 13, 2009 at 7:36 p.m.
  • The Victoria Advocate did not report Ms. Miller apologized and asked that I drop the charges. I agreed and if the haters need a witness, Raleigh Coppedge can attest. Please disclose yourselves and lets dance. If I am such a liar, unprofessional and a disgrace to Cuero, be a man or woman and state your real name!

    May 13, 2009 at 7:02 p.m.
  • I know both parties involved. One has the reputation of agitation, controversy, false allegations, and grandstanding. The other does not.

Was it Shakespear who wrote, "Me thinks thou doest protest too much."?

    May 13, 2009 at 5:46 p.m.
  • Once she put her hands on her, she left her fate in the victims hands.

You nor I can determine if the blow was intended to do harm. However, it was a blow nonetheless.

That would be like me hitting you and saying "It was not that hard of a blow! I am a christian too! (trying to justify myself with something that does not matter) You may have a different opinion as to whether the blow I gave you was intended to do damage. Kinda like you have a different opinion here.

Like I said, it will all come out in the end. "Hicktorian code" or not you know I am right.

All I am saying is she should not of raised her hand and physically touched this person.

    May 13, 2009 at 4:27 p.m.
  • I repost this for Hicktoria:
As I mentioned earlier if this was a harmful blow intending to injure Lisa then she deserves a trial, jury, and a sentencing.

I am saying she deserves a trial, not conviction by internet.
Luckily for us we have due process not "Hicktorian Code" by which to punish all the accused with.

    May 13, 2009 at 2:53 p.m.
  • It does not matter how well (you think) you know somebody. People who have been "good" all of their lives can still do "bad" at some point. We all make mistakes. You sound like someone who would defend a dog that has never bitten anyone before...

    May 13, 2009 at 2:43 p.m.
  • Great iJoe shes a christian shes guilty how original. If you live in Cuero and know either Flo or Lisa you are laughing at this. I mentioned Flo's decades of serving others because the thought of her "assaulting" someone is hilarious. No she doesn't get a free pass. As I mentioned earlier if this was a harmful blow intending to injure Lisa then she deserves a trial, jury, and a sentencing. If she was startled by a well intended person and open handedly pushed them back for space then that is entirely different. Claims have been made about number of witnesses and written statements that can not be supported at this time. iJoe please don't confuse Flo's love for her fellow man as a free pass. You may be reading to much into comments intended to illustrate her love and compassion for people as a "she isn't capable" type of defense. Look past the smoke and at the fire that is the City of Cuero Administration.

    May 13, 2009 at 2:23 p.m.
  • You do the crime you do the time. I do not care who you are. RIght is right and wrong is wrong. There are no free passes in my book!

    May 13, 2009 at 2:19 p.m.
  • I think its funny that TyrannyResponseTeam thinks we should give free passes to senior citizens. If she did it then she should pay for it. Simple as that.

Just because she has spent her time in a ministry capacity doesn't mean she's incapable of doing something like this. What about all those priest molesting children?

    May 13, 2009 at 1:48 p.m.
  • The Advocate might want to take a look at the police report one more time...I can clearly see everything they blacked out.

    May 13, 2009 at 1:32 p.m.
  • The witness statements seemed contradicting. One didn't see anything, another said she was tapped, and another said she was hit with an open hand. If there were 6 witnesses, where are the other statements?

How many more episodes will Cuero have involving their city secretary?

    May 13, 2009 at 1:25 p.m.
  • The Police report I read had three witnesses that saw what happened. Where are the other three?

    May 13, 2009 at 1:15 p.m.
  • I do not care who you are or how old you are. If you hit another person like this you will have to pay the consequences. How hard is that to understand?
So if someone is being aggressive with your grandmother and she pushes them off(open hand to forehead) your grandmother goes to jail. So before we start making people "pay the consequences" we might want to put their actions and intent in a given situation into context before railing them with jail time.

    May 13, 2009 at 1:12 p.m.
  • I do not care who you are or how old you are. If you hit another person like this you will have to pay the consequences. How hard is that to understand?

    May 13, 2009 at 12:34 p.m.
  • Why were you touching the ballot period? Did she ask for your help? Why would a 74 year old woman assault anyone? If you feel so strong about being "attacked" by a 5 foot 3 inch elderly woman then press charges. If she is guilty she will be convicted by a jury of her peers. This appears to be no more then a sideshow to distract from the real issues in Cuero.

    May 13, 2009 at 12:17 p.m.
  • Let's see. A post yesterday at 4:45PM. Lunch hour?

Another post at 11:05 today. Lunch hour?

And a "lunch hour" post at 12:02.

    Interesting.

    May 13, 2009 at 12:10 p.m.
  • Thanks, on my lunch break. Yes I am very interested in what the public has to say. The truth shall set you free!

    May 13, 2009 at 12:02 p.m.
  • It appears to me the city secretary of Cuero is more concerned with what is being written about her than doing her job.

Shouldn't you be serving the citizens of Cuero?

    May 13, 2009 at 11:40 a.m.
  • Please click on the Official Document button and read the statements and police report. It was not an accident, it was an intentional pop to my head and her ballot had already been scanned.

    May 13, 2009 at 11:05 a.m.
  • Deja vu all over again! Just another example of where the rule of law takes a back seat, in deference to the person who committed the crime.

    May 13, 2009 at 10:42 a.m.
  • It must be exciting to live in Cuero.

    May 13, 2009 at 10:34 a.m.
  • Lisa if Flo did strike you then there is a reason for it. I am not saying you deserved it, because no one does. Flo is a very reserved person, and for most of her life has served in a ministry capacity helping those that need it. That said she does not hear well and have you considered that you startled her and if she struck you it was in a defensive setting. I shutter to think that we start pressing charges on our seniors. Whats more important is the lack of confidence that the people have in their elected officials. Which is obvious from the three incumbents that got ousted in the election. You excluded, the leadership in town doesn't have a clue, and their recent drama in the meetings only brings light to their incompetence.

    May 13, 2009 at 9:28 a.m.
  • Assault of a public servant: Want to know what happens to you in Austin if you do that, even if you are two months pregnant? Arrested! What if it had been a cop? No question about it. Why was the woman not arrested?

    May 12, 2009 at 6:42 p.m.
  • I have received several phone calls regarding the incident on Saturday. Please take the time to review the police report that contains the 6 witnesses that wrote statements and actually watched her hit me in the forehead. I feel if I am trying to run an election and be professional, I except the same from the voters. Never did I try to take her ballot, again the conversation was in front of the Presiding Judge, who requested my assistance, the Alternate Judge and one of Clerks.
