Two more steps are left for the University of Houston-Victoria to become a four year institution.
House Bill 1056 by Rep. Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria, is moving quickly through the Senate.
It was heard Wednesday by the Senate Higher Education Committee and approved.
"The bill will now be sent to the full Senate," said Sen. Glenn Hegar, R-Katy. "I'm not sure when it will be heard, but I expect for it to be by the end of next week."
The 81st Legislative Session will end Monday, June 1.
"Rep. Morrison and I have worked hard to get this bill passed," Hegar said. "With the support of the University of Houston System and community I have a hard time believing that Gov. (Rick) Perry would not sign the bill."
Hegar authored identical Senate Bill 567, which is in the House of Representatives Higher Education Committee.
"As long as one of the two bills passes, that's all that matters," Hegar said.
The purpose of making two identical bills was to make sure that one would make it to the governor.
"I've already passed the bill out of the Senate once, it will pass twice," Hegar said.
The bill should be approved by the end of the month, he said.
