These are among the Memorial Day events planned in the region.

YOAKUM

10 a.m. Monday, Yoakum Fire Department, on Nelson Street; sponsored by the Yoakum VFW; speaker will be Don Williams, president of the VFW in Hallettsville; Taps will be played along with a 21-gun salute, the Yoakum Chamber of Commerce will also have a laying of wreaths.

SHINER

8:30 a.m., Monday, Green-Dickson Municipal Park, 135 County Road 350; sponsored by Chamber of Commerce; speaker, Jeff Pesek, Lone StarBank branch manager; the event will have a laying of wreaths.

HALLETTSVILLE

9:30 a.m. Monday Chamber of Commerce helicopter pad, U.S. 77 North; sponsored by the Veterans of America Lone Star Chapter 854 of Lavaca County; speakers will be Ronnie Leck, county judge and war veteran, and Don Williams. Program will include a 21-gun salute and playing of taps.

VICTORIA, PORT LAVACA AND BAY CITY

Operation Care Drop, Memorial Day through July 4; sponsored by IBC Bank and H-E-B. Seven IBC banks and participating H-E-B stores in the three cities will be drop-off sites for care package supplies.

NIXON

6:30 a.m Saturday, Nixon Veterans Memorial Park, 401 N. Nixon Ave., sponsored by the citizens of Nixon; Nixon fallen soldiers' names read. The taps will close the service and a wreath laying will also be held. Also planned are a parade, volleyball tournament and patriotic musical. For more information, visit www.nixontx.com.
