David Husmann knows what it takes to be a successful quarterback.

Husmann played the position at the University of Houston and has tutored quarterbacks since beginning his coaching career in 1976.

Among his successful pupils were Marc Tidwell and Casey Taber, who led Schulenburg to Class 2A state championships.

Husmann will bring his knowledge of quarterbacks to Memorial as the Vipers' offensive coordinator.

Husmann's hiring was approved at Thursday night's meeting of the Victoria school district board of trustees.

"I have been very impressed with the talent, teamwork, enthusiasm and coaching the team has displayed," Husmann said. "The offensive linemen are very impressive, as are the backs, receivers and quarterbacks."

Husmann comes to Memorial from Hallettsville where he has been the offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

Husmann will replace Kyle Taylor, who resigned to return to Hallettsville, where he resides.

"I like his work with quarterbacks," Memorial head coach Mickey Finley said of Husmann. "Especially his knowledge of the play-action passing game. It fits our scheme. We run the ball so well and that will only make us better. He has a lot of great experience and a real passion for the game. What he has to offer is really going to help us."

Husmann began his coaching career as an assistant at Gonzales before becoming the offensive coordinator at Pearland.

He became the head coach at Schulenburg in 1985 and led the Shorthorns to three state final appearances and the 1991 and 1992 state championships.

Husmann compiled a 139-31-1 record before leaving to become the head coach at Gladewater in 1998.

Husmann had a 49-41 record and made five playoff appearances in his eight seasons at Gladewater.

He spent two years as the principal at Shiner High School before returning to coaching at Hallettsville.

Husmann is looking forward to getting started at Memorial and helping the quarterbacks prepare for next season.

"Obviously, I have been very impressed by everyone within the system," Husmann said. "You just feel the boys and coaches know that this is going to be a great year."

Does anyone see something wrong with this quote? Hey Coach Finley.................Your football team does not "run" the football so well. Your football team really does nothing too well.

Please spare us the stupid comments in the paper about how you guys do anything well. Start winning football games and then come back and give us quotes about how well your team "runs" the ball.

That was a completely irresponsible comment.
