The election of officers to the Victoria school district board caused a ruckus when discussing school colors.
Former vice president Bernard Klimist was the only board member to vote against the appointment of Lou Svetlik as president and Tami Keeling as vice president at the Thursday meeting.
He called for a point of order when new board member Ross Mansker and secretary Ray Walden moved and seconded to vote for option two of the school colors for the two new high schools.
"Point of order. We voted on red and black at our last meeting. The board cannot change a prior vote with what you are doing here," Klimist said.
He said Walden, Svetlik and Keeling wanted Mansker as a board member so they would have the majority vote when the board has a split vote.
"You will need five votes to change what we voted on a month ago," Klimist said.
On April 16, the board voted 5 to 2 for the colors red and black for both Victoria East and West high schools.
On April 29, Superintendent Bob Moore formed the Colors Implementation Committee. The committee of coaches and staff came up with six color options - three for each school.
"These are just suggestions brought forward from the meeting. We did not plan on having anyone present," Keeling said.
Walden, Keeling and Svetlik said they thought the vote from last month on the colors was a starting point.
"Just like we don't know what the depiction of the warrior will be, we all knew that working through this would take additional detail," Keeling said.
Walden then moved to postpone the vote for one month so the board could discuss the three options suggested by administration along with what the board voted on in April. Svetlik seconded the motion.
"Postpone, for one month? For what? This has already been voted on. This is not doing any good when we have three options here, one, two and three. One is nearest with what we want. Why do we keep postponing? Let's step up and do what we have to do," board member James Murphy said.
After a heated discussion, the majority of the board, except Sveltik, agreed to add a third color to each school.
The board took the second most popular color voted on by students. Victoria East will be red, black and gold, while Victoria West will be red, black and silver.
"I still feel that there is not enough distinction," Walden said.
Although the gold and silver were not the first choices for the board, Svetlik said it does offer some distinction.
Mansker and Estella De Los Santos were sworn into office. Mansker was elected to the District 4 seat on May 9. De Los Santos was uncontested and kept her District 2 seat.

WOW you mean that Dr. De Los Santos voted for them and they didn't vote for her? I don't guess she will ever get elected to anything by these people. I guess you will have to go south to find equality or out of Victoria anyway.
May 22, 2009 at 7:44 p.m.I am kinda partial to Pink and Purple!!
May 22, 2009 at 6:57 p.m.longdistanceshot,
The people in district 4 said loud and clear that they were tired of the "legacy of leadership" by Laura Smith.
Those same voters thought that her vote on the colors was terrible. Hence, they elected Mansker.
It is his duty to represent them and all the children by bringing his opinion to the table and having discussion.
District 4 has a new representative, let him do his job.
The board final came up with a decision that the majority of them supported, so what's the problem?
May 22, 2009 at 5:19 p.m.Amylorey, you unfortunately have yet to prove anything but your bias and dependency on heresy. You bring up their alma mater in an attempt to prove "hidden objectives," and I see absolutely no relevance other than you, the pot, calling the kettle black. Everyone must come to terms with the fact that those schools are gone. Dead. Non-existent. Move on, and get over it. Let the money being spent to construct these two new campuses be worthwhile. And that is exactly what the schools need to be, new. The school board claimed to allow all students a "vote" in this color selection process, yet look at the numbers. Even any non-mathematician can see that there is no possible way every student in the district had a vote. Nowhere near close. I know for a fact, not by heresy mind you, that a large majority of the students on the Stroman campus were never given the opportunity to vote. Their ballots were not even distributed to the teachers until the day after the voting deadline. Please explain to me how that makes the red and black decision a student-based, student supported one. By allowing modification to the ridiculousness that is having two 5A high schools in one town represented by the exact same colors; some sense is being interjected back into a quick school board decision that will ultimately result in Victoria being even more the laughing stock of their district.
May 22, 2009 at 4:17 p.m.Superdad
May 22, 2009 at 3:38 p.m.Maybe the school board can get to work and do some investigation or an audit of some sort! Lets hope for that!
amylorry, don't be too quick to act confident. as far as I know Walden and Svetlik don't have any secret agenda to fight for.
May 22, 2009 at 3:33 p.m.I think that Bernie and his obsessive commanding power is more sickening! Fortunately our community is starting to smell the coffee and that is why board members such as Keeling and Mansker are winning with a huge lead against their opponents! Thank goodness for a change to end the greed and conspiracy!
RUKIDDINGME - Not that it matters but, get your facts right..DJ Jaynes (Debbie Lord in the yearbook) was Spring Coronation Queen, not Miss VHS. Check that 1969 yearbook again!
May 22, 2009 at 3:17 p.m.Geez, can any of you read? It's SVETLIK. LOU SVETLIK. Not "Swetlik" or "Swetlick." All of you argue like you have an intelligent point to make, yet you have the grammatical and spelling skills comparable to that of a 5th grader. Both Ray Walden and Lou Svetlik ran for the school board to try and do their part to resolve the issue that was "consolidation." Neither of the men have any other motive than to do what is right for district, right for the schools, and most importantly, right for the students. I challenge you to find one reason these two stand-up men would have "hidden objectives." Unlike others on the board or those who have made an attempt at the board, these men have the right objectives in mind. Like you all should, they want all VISD students to have the proper high school experiences and identities they deserve. Trying to force dead traditions from an over-rated, non-existent school on students who were very young elementary students during it's last bit of existence is ridiculous. As with consolidation, the school board needs to be making every attempt to start anew and have a fresh beginning with these two brand new schools.
May 22, 2009 at 3:15 p.m.The way I figure it, the gold school will be the new Stroman (remnants of blue/gold). The silver school will be the new VHS (they sometimes used silver along with the red and black).
Most younger people don't like gold. My prediction is that the students at East will not be happy.
May 22, 2009 at 3:06 p.m.rukiddingme, you probably meant to say DJ has a 501(c) for her group. You cant commercialize a group within VISD according to their District By-Laws! Then why have a drill team booster club???
If that is the case, you have to pay taxes on equipment, supplies and the VISD should charge rental fee for the gyms/shows/travel etc...over a certain amount of monetary then the group needs to get a Tax ID#.......someone else can go investigate that ;-P
May 22, 2009 at 2:43 p.m.Wow. I've lived all over this country and I've never seen so much drama in any school board and over something so STUPID! I'd find it hysterical if it weren't for the fact that students graduating from Memorial are so pathetically ill prepared for even the most menial jobs, let alone college. Will it be any different with new schools if the school board's attention is focused on something as trivial as school colors? What a bunch of babies. I'll start saving now so I can send my kids to St. Joe's.
May 22, 2009 at 2:34 p.m.Are you really bringing up a picture from 40 years ago? How is that relevant? By the way - the original Victoriadore uniforms are red and white, not black and red, so they wouldn't be used anyway. Black was the accent at VHS.
May 22, 2009 at 2:33 p.m.JD--
Wherever did you go to school? Of course our students do not go to school to play sportS; they go to school to play A sport---football. This is Texas. Football is a religion, and the catechism begins at the Y when the kid is just a tot. Full confirmation does not occur until the player signs with the right college. Academics are just the filler along the way.
You said, "The point of schooling is education, not sports. America's focus needs to be re-adjusted." I could not agree more.
May 22, 2009 at 2:24 p.m.Well said.
Hopefully this vote, IS THEIR LAST VOTE!!!!! LET'S MOVE ON. I am so tired of hearing about which school gets what color, and so on. The understanding was the so called colors had to be chosen by March to be able to order uniforms and such, well heck it's already the end of MAY!
May 22, 2009 at 1:01 p.m.Red and black with gold and silver are both ugly! yuk! I'd rather see both schools have the same color like they wanted...red/black/white and mix it up as they see fit.
May 22, 2009 at 12:13 p.m."Amylorey, I am not delusional and I am not lying. Obviously you don't know the kind of behavior Klimist has exhibited in the past and maybe you dont know the hidden agenda. Maybe you did not vote last year or you were in denial . Just read the previous posts and there are many who see it as I do."
May 22, 2009 at 11:41 a.m.The amount of discord and concern this matter of uniform colors has caused is amazing. Who cares? Why care? Our children don't go to school to play sports; they go to school to learn. Where is all the discord and concern over poor student performance; the fact that children coming out of our high schools, in ever increasing numbers, can't read or write well enough to handle entry level college courses, forcing colleges to add remedial type classes to help them along. Never before has this been the case. If anyone doubts what I am saying, find a college instructor and ask them. I have no idea how much of VISD's budget goes to extra-curricular sport activities but I am sure the figure would be staggering. What VISD should do, is cancel all sports and extra-curricular activities and invest the money that would have been spent on these programs into building renovation, maintenance or teacher/staff salaries. I have been in many of the local schools and found restrooms, lockers, cafeterias and other areas in woeful need of renovation or repair. Bathrooms that smell of urine, with sinks barely attached to walls. Hallways in which the kids are pressed shoulder to shoulder during passing periods. Portable buildings with holes in the floors and in many cases just unsteady. I could go on, but I'm sure my point has been made. The point of schooling is education, not sports. America's focus needs to be re-adjusted.
May 22, 2009 at 11:31 a.m.Intrested., You are so correct. I work at the school. I know what is going on. The Victoriadores will live forever no matter what anyone else says. Nobody will ever cross DJ. The question is WHY?
May 22, 2009 at 11:29 a.m.interested,
May 22, 2009 at 9:40 a.m.you see things clearly. The drill team hidden agenda strikes again!
longdistanceshot,
you need to see the full picture.
You see there is a "hidden agenda."
Last year klimist was very upset when Keeling ran against Jaynes and won. He would have preferred his good friend jaynes as board member.
"Former vice president Bernard Klimist was the only board member to vote against the appointment of Lou Svetlik as president and Tami Keeling as vice president at the Thursday meeting"
May 22, 2009 at 9:38 a.m.Now this time around he is upset again. Smith lost to Mansker.
When bernie doesn't have control he throws tantrums kind of like that drill team lady at the high school. Do you get it now???
Is anyone really surprised that we will have two schools both red and black colors but NO we are not bringing back the old schools - does this board really think everyone is stupid? Why not just name both schools vicotira high and use a stingaree for both mascots and continue to wipe any memory of stroman off hte map. They really think everyone is that dumb not to see what they are doing - no wonder mr. klimist is adamant - doesn't his wife coregraph for the victoriadores who never really quit calling htemselves victoriadores and now will have thier red and black back again...
May 22, 2009 at 9:35 a.m.why isn't Dr. DelosSantos PRESIDENT???? Because she is differ than others and 'they' can not relate. She has major credentials than the others that are business folks or they using 'domestic engineer' and 'project coordinator' on their resume, lol
I am sure as with the City Council -- people are tired of all the ill-frugal spending going on and decisions the VISD Bd is doing. Lets see how many win re-elections. Maybe these folks meet off-site on 59South at the "mini mart" to get their ducks in order. hehehehe
May 22, 2009 at 9:14 a.m.Well folks, Bernie Kimist is at it again!!! I am sure that he screamed and cried because he couldn't get his way. The only disorder in the school board is Bernie and he is always the one to start it!
I think that all the board members are doing a great job and would like to see Swetlik in charge as President. Too bad no one is willing to run against Bernie!! Now that would be a change for the better!
May 22, 2009 at 9:09 a.m.OMG! Who cares.
Here's how it will all play out. Most of the teams will wear Gold and Black and the other school will wear silver and black.
The red was just left in to make all you rdiculous Victorians happy.
This is absolutely hilarious. I can't even believe I am posting to this garbage.
May 22, 2009 at 8:48 a.m.I can assure you that the football and drill team uniforms are NOT in storage. Some of the students who were there at the time of consolidation have the jerseys and drill team uniforms.
May 22, 2009 at 8:21 a.m.amylorey, I remember when Victoria high school had two colors, red and white. at sometime between the 60's and 80's they added black. Our football coaches in the Valley said something about the black being an advantage on the football field. Did the board approve the black being added, back then or did they just slide it in? My neighbors tell me that band and drill team uniforms from Victoria High are mothballed in storage. Perhaps there was a hidden agenda of a plan all along. I am seeing this and beginning to think I should have stay down south.
May 22, 2009 at 7:43 a.m.SmarteePantz, you are so funny, yet so right. What I am learning so far in this town is how people love to fight and bicker and throw tempertantrums when they dont get their way. Is Klimist ken to that Drill Team Coach at the high school that is know for laying on the gym floor and throwing a tantrum. Ive never seen it but the students have plenty of stories to say.
May 22, 2009 at 7:37 a.m.It's a sad day for VISD. Everything was running so smoothly and now its in shambles. So much for all the progress made over the past 9 years.
I agree that the board meetings should be televised. More people need to see what is actually going on at board meetings so they can make informed decisions at election time.
May 22, 2009 at 6:45 a.m.superDad, I believe you have nailed it! Funny stuff!
May 22, 2009 at 6:31 a.m.Woah! Looks like Walden, Swetlick and Keeling got caught arranging things under the table again. The Advocate did not mention that the three of them voted against Dr. De Los Santos who is the most qualified person in education on the board. It was crummy to do that to Dr. De Los Santos and crummier to wait until they got another ringer on the board to try to re vote the colors knowing it was not proper. Its high school colors, who cares. It was settled and should have been left alone for the administration to handle. These three should understand procedure. And we are supposed to trust our kids to them when they go to this extent to manipulate the rules for colors?? Swetlick as President? How is Swetlick going to know what to do without Walden telling him?? Its going to be fun watching this-which I agree, why isn't this televised like the city?????? I say we start a petition to demand coverage!!!! Sign me up!
May 22, 2009 at 12:52 a.m.oh no...don't change the colors then DJ will make parents spend more money on uniforms---leave them all red/black. lol
looks like East will the preferred campus being GOLD---#1
May 21, 2009 at 11:30 p.m.than another West will be Silver---#2, second
so 3d school would be easy red/black and of course Bronze---3d
Who says there's not enough to do in Victoria?
Why there's plenty, and so much of the entertainment is free!
Now, if we could just get those school board meetings aired like the City Council meetings, the homebound could enjoy more of what Victoria has to offer.
