VAN VLECK
Name: Lacy Johnson
Grade: 11th
School: Van Vleck High School
Competing at state: Theatrical costume designing competition doesn't hold a district or region contest, it's all judged together.
Only the top 20 from classifications A-5A make it to state, so it's pretty nerve-wracking to wait for an answer on whether or not you will make it.
We were given a prompt, this year it was "Phantom of the Opera," and we're challenged with designing five different costumes along with a mask for the play.
In addition to designing and drawing the costumes, I had to choose appropriate fabrics and construct a mask.
I found out in January that I was one of the 20 finalists.

How are you preparing for state?
To prepare for the state competition, I'm doing the same thing I have done to prepare for the other editorial writing competitions I've participated in - review practice editorials I've written and past prompts for the event.
