1909

May 24 - George Dietzel shot and killed an alligator eight feet long about seven miles down the river yesterday. He did not notice the reptile until it attacked his dog. Rudolph Metcher also slew one of the largest wildcats ever seen in this section while out hunting near town yesterday.

1934

May 27 - Victoria's most serious fire in years caused the destruction of the Farmers and Merchants gin warehouse and platform along the Southern Pacific Lines track on East Street, shortly after midnight last night, with a loss estimated at $10,000, fully covered by insurance. Three hoboes, seen running from the building after the fire started, are believed to have caused it. One Southern Pacific box car was destroyed and two cars and a flat car were badly damaged. The railroad's loss is estimated at $3,000. The South Texas Cotton Oil Company, owner of the gin property, lost, in addition to the warehouse and platform, valued at $2,500, 1,000 bagging patterns valued at $750, 11 bales of cotton worth $500 and 118 bales of linters valued at $3,000.

1959

May 29 - Joseph M. Pickering, 82, retired lumberman, civic leader and charter member of the Intracoastal Canal Association, was honored by the Army yesterday for more than 50 years of service to inland waterway development in Texas. Pickering became the first Texan ever to get the Army award known as a certificate of Appreciation for Patriotic Civilian Service. The certificate was present by Brig. Gen. William Whipple, Corps Engineers division engineer from Dallas, in a ceremony at the Victoria Country Club.

1984

May 25 - Victoria ranks among the top 20 of the nation's fastest growing cities, according to a study evaluating population increases in the 329 metropolitan areas of the country between the 1980 census and 1983.
