THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to an exciting article in the Advocate's Kidology about Lauren McCaskill and her much community activities - she's also a good student. All who have inspired her can be proud of her and of themselves. Keep up the good work, Lauren, but have some fun, too.

Thumbs up to the Advocate for their weekly update of new school construction. I love to read about the number of yards of concrete poured and the number of feet of rebar used. That stuff is so much better than information I can use on a weekly basis, like the progress of Laurent Street, Lone Tree Road, U.S. Highway 77 North and U.S. Highway 59 South construction.

Thumbs up to Jamod Sheffield and Joshua Flowers. I appreciated them following me home after I had car trouble. They were so nice and helpful.

Two thumbs up to the insurance agent when he was called by a senior lady insured by his State Farm Insurance Company and told she was broke down (there was a tornado in the area). He decided he would not want his mom sitting out on the highway in that storm and went to pick her up and brought her back to Victoria.

THUMBS UP

A big thumbs up to Megan Willmon of Victoria for her courageous and inspiring performance in the National Spelling Bee. We are confident she will be back next year.

Thumbs up to the Fennessey Ranch for its state recognition. The Refugio County ranch near Bayside received a Lone Star Land Steward Award, one of 10 ranches that received the award.

Thumbs up to Elroy Porter, the 88-year-old Buffalo Soldier who lives in Cuero, for finally receiving the medals for his service in World War II. We appreciate your service to our country.

Thumbs up to all of our high school graduates and college graduates.

Thumbs up to the emergency management personnel, Crossroads Red Cross and all the people who, as the official season approaches, are preparing to deal with any howling monster that comes at us from out in the Gulf of Mexico.

Thumbs up to the Calhoun and Industrial high school math teams who showed their stuff with first-place team and individual wins at the UIL state championships. Way to go, kids.

Thumbs up to new United Way director Clifford W. Grimes, as he fights for dollars to worthy causes while dealing with a down economy.

THUMBS DOWN

A tragic thumbs down on the terrible highway death toll being taken this year all over our area. Let's all use extreme caution, and get to our destinations safely.

Thumbs down on the insanity of the North Korean regime, as they heighten world tensions with the testing of missiles and nuclear weapons.
