Lindsey Ferguson played first base for the University of Houston-Victoria softball team for two years and is the team's assistant coach this year.
Lindsey Ferguson is transitioning from player to coach this season for the University of Houston-Victoria softball team.
Ferguson, a League City native, played for the Jaguars the first two years UHV fielded a team and helped lead them to 67 wins. Now, she hopes to help head coach Keri Lambeth lead the Jaguars to even more success.
"There are so many new players here, but I have a really good feeling about them," said Ferguson, who is working towards her master's degree and signed a one-year contract to become an assistant coach. "I know they have the talent and I've seen the determination in each of them to be the best. I'm just excited to be a part of it."
Ferguson hit .322 as a senior last season and drove in 27 runs as the Jaguars advanced to the NAIA National Championships. The former UHV first baseman is the infield and pitching coach for a team that returns only five players.
Part of her transition has been going from teammate to coach for those five. Ferguson, last year's team captain, said the adjustment has been strange at times but she is getting used to it.
"I have respect for them and they have respect for me," she said. "It's a mutual thing that is only going to grow as the year goes on. Spending so much time together at practice, we've worked through it a lot."
Brittany Faas, a returning catcher for the Jaguars and Ferguson's roommate last year, said it's been an interesting experience during fall practice.
"We had tons of fun together last year and we are still this year even though she is a coach," Faas said. "It's just more of a professional relationship now. She has taken the next step and we all respect her and listen to everything that she is telling us to do. I understand it's not easy for her to tell us to go run, it's part of her job to help us get better."
Ferguson said the opportunity to remain a part of the Jaguars' softball team is something she is looking forward to at this time in her life.
"I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so when coach called me it seemed perfect," Ferguson said. "I had just graduated, didn't have any job offers and I still loved softball. This is perfect because I can go to graduate school and still be with our team.
I was there in their position five months ago, so I know what they're going through. I know that you get really tired with the workouts and it can be overwhelming when school gets tough. I think I can help them through that."
Returning pitcher Tasha Rotramel said Ferguson is doing a great job with the transition.
"We know that goofy side of her is still there but we take her seriously because she is our coach," Rotramel said. "It's really good still having her around."
