The Memorial Vipers lost by 10 points to Converse Judson, but in reality, it wouldn't have changed their playoff situation if they had won by 10.

Memorial (4-5, 3-3) is in the exact position it was in last season going into the final game of the season against San Antonio East Central. The Vipers won that game 38-28 over the Hornets to advance to the playoffs. This year, Memorial must do the same thing only this time at East Central's Hive.

"I think we are playing good football right now, but we still have things to correct to make the playoffs," said Memorial head coach Mickey Finley after his team took a 46-36 District 27-5A loss to the Rockets on Friday.

Memorial did not have any turnovers against Judson (7-2, 6-0), but it did have six fumbles that stalled drives in a game the Vipers felt they should have won.

"You can't play Santa Claus with a team like Judson," Finley said. "We just gave them too much. I think we outplayed them, but we have to beat them and make the plays throughout the game. We are playing hard and I like that."

Despite the fumbles and the 10-point loss, Memorial's performance against the Rockets was an incredible turnaround from last year's game in Converse. At the Rockets' home field last season, Memorial took a 58-0 loss. This year, the Vipers were as close at 43-36 late in the fourth quarter and saw the tandem of Roderick Warren and O.J. Hughes combine for over 400 yards rushing.

Going into the final regular season game of the year, people are noticing the difference a year has made for Memorial.

"The biggest difference I saw was that they were much more competitive than last year," said Judson head coach Jim Rackley. "Every time we would make a play, they would come back and score again. That speaks well for a program and the way they worked during the offseason.

Around District 27-5A

Memorial will be facing an East Central team coming off a 59-7 loss to Converse Wagner on Friday. The Hornets (3-6, 3-3) gave up 511 yards of offense and managed only 165 yards of their own. Wagner's David Glasco ran for 154 yards and four touchdowns for the Thunderbirds, who led 39-7 at halftime.

East Central's Chris Johnson gained 126 yards on the ground on 15 carries, including the Hornets' only touchdown on a 46-yard run in the second quarter. Wagner improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in district with the win.

Corpus Christi Carroll eased to a 27-0 win over Corpus Christi King on Friday, leading 19-0 at halftime and improving to 5-1 in district play. Charles Coleman ran for a game-high and district-high 237 yards in the game and also scored a touchdown. John Bighamian, who had a touchdown reception in Carroll's 22-16 win over Memorial in the first week of district play, caught two touchdowns against King from quarterback Jake Sims.

In the battle of the two winless District 27-5A teams, South San Antonio took out some of its frustrations with a 20-0 win over San Antonio Highlands on Friday. Jose Moreno had a pair of 33-yard field goals, and Joe Morales and Aaron Garcia scored on runs for the Bobcats in their win. South San is now 3-6 overall and 1-5 in district. Highlands goes into its final game of the season against Wagner with a 0-9, 0-6 record.

  • Converse Judson is a class act! Well coached,Fundamentally sound, always hustling, and no gloating. What is amazing is, after losing many key players they have managed to stay atop.Remember,Wagner was pre-season favorites.
