NEW TAITON - One person was killed and another injured in a two-vehicle crash Sunday evening in Wharton County.

The person fatally injured was identified as Charles Kenneth Perry Sr., 60, of Bay City, according to a Department of Public Safety accident report. He was pronounced dead at 10 p.m. by Justice of the Peace Jeanette Krenek, of Wharton.

The injured person was identified as Mandi Jai Balderas, 19, of Columbus. She was taken to Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition with a broken leg and possible neck injuries.

The crash happened at 8:38 p.m. on state Highway 71 near New Taiton.

State Trooper Alfred Ochoa, of El Campo, reported that Balderas' 2005 Ford Escape was traveling north when it veered into the southbound lane. That resulted in a collision involving Perry's southbound 1987 Toyota Forerunner.

Perry was wearing a seatbelt, but Balderas was not, Ochoa reported.
