To request a presentation by Texas Operation Lifesaver, contact Sally Tingle at 800-362-2210 or txol@hot.rr.com. The group's Web site is www.oli.org.

A nonprofit group will spread an oft-ignored message during a trip to the railroad crossing at state Highway 185 in Bloomington.

"That's where drivers are ignoring activated warning devices by driving around lowered railroad gates," said Sally Tingle, executive director of Texas Operation Lifesaver. "Many drivers do not realize that driving around the lowered gates is dangerous and illegal. The lowered gates mean the road is closed and the train has the right of way."

Texas Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit group that educates the public about safety at highway and railroad crossings, as well as trespassing on railroad property. The group teams with local law enforcement and railroad companies to spread its message.

Texas incurs the most injuries resulting from collisions at railroad crossings, as well as the most injuries resulting from trespassing on railroad property, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.

"These are two categories where being No. 1 is not a good thing," Tingle said. "These tragedies can be prevented by obeying the warning signs or activated warning devices."

The group will distribute safety information from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to motorists who approach the Highway 185 crossing.

Then at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Kurtis Landry, Texas Operation Lifesaver presenter, will speak at the Bloomington Elementary School cafeteria. He will discuss rail safety and field questions.
