Q: I've seen a lot of ads recently for Campaign Victoria. Who is UHV trying to get to donate scholarships for Campaign Victoria?
A:What I am about to write may smash a few misconceptions. Anybody can donate money for scholarships. You don't have to be rich to donate money for scholarships. Most students benefit greatly from small scholarships measured in tens or hundreds of dollars.
In case you haven't heard, Campaign Victoria is a five-year effort to raise $250,000 annually for scholarships to bring freshmen and sophomores to the University of Houston-Victoria from places like Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley.
This is a great opportunity for everyone to invest in the future of the community and the lives of young students. Small donations can quickly add up to make a huge difference.
If you don't believe me, ask any current or former student who has ever lived on instant noodles for a weekend how much of a difference a $100 scholarship would make in his or her life.
Even in these tight economic times, we can all find ways to contribute to the future. Many people already are. For example, consider the story of Kristen Lindley.
She came to UHV as a softball player in 2008. Scholarships donated by generous community members helped recruit her to Victoria, where she quickly became a team co-captain, community volunteer, president of the Student Senate and UHV's first UH System Student Regent.
Now a graduate student and UHV employee, she is saving the money she would normally spend on eating out once a week and donating it to Campaign Victoria over the next year.
Why? Because she wants to give others the same opportunities she had to learn and grow at UHV.
These scholarships will attract students who will provide great economic and cultural benefits to the area, as well as help young adults achieve their dreams. They'll spend money here, work here, learn here, live here. Many will even stay here to become the next generation of community leaders. By helping these students achieve their dreams, we will be supporting the dream of growth and prosperity for our community.
