Two cases pending locally in scent identification line ups
Locally, Deputy Keith Pikett is accused of civil rights violations in two federal lawsuits. The suits allege Pikett's methods are flawed and lack scientific credibility.
Calvin Lee Miller, 43, of Yoakum filed suit against Pikett in federal court in Victoria on May 12. Miller was accused of robbery and aggravated sexual assault and spent two months in jail based largely on a scent lineup. He was cleared of the charges.
Michael Buchanek, 55, of Victoria originally filed suit against Pikett on Jan. 29, 2008. An amended complaint was filed on April 8, 2008. Buchanek's home was searched after he was identified as a suspect because of a scent lineup and trail performed by Pikett and his hounds.
Both cases are pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, Victoria Division.
