Cuero RB candidate for Texas Football honor
CUERO - Cuero running back Trent Jackson spent the second half of Friday night's District 28-3A game against Gonzales watching from the sideline.
Jackson did more than his share in the first half. The sophomore carried 14 times for 292 yards in the Gobblers' 68-13 win.
Jackson scored on runs of 2, 20, 36 and 63 yards as Cuero took a 61-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.
"Without playing the second half that probably had to be one of the best games I've had," Jackson said. "The linemen did an incredible job. Just about every time I touched the ball there was a hole to run through and that's my job to get through a hole. They did their job and I just had to do my job."
Jackson's performance has made him a candidate for Texas Football's Player of the Week honors.
Jackson is one of 10 players chosen from around the state. Fans can vote for week's the top player at www.texasfootball.com until Friday at noon.
Jackson has carried 149 times for an area-leading 1,562 yards and 19 touchdowns this season.
He rushed for 1,436 yards and 26 touchdowns last season to break Robert Strait's school freshman rushing record.
"It was a heck of a performance by Trent," Cuero coach Mark Reeve said. "You know he's starting to get well. He had the turf toe early and hurt his shoulder a little bit. I think he's kind of getting into that mid-season form and I think the line's probably playing a little bit better also."
