The latest production by Theatre Victoria is so intriguing, it has lured one local actress back to the stage.
It's been about eight years since Mary Hall was last in a theatrical production and when auditions for "Perfect Crime" came up, she decided to take a shot.
"I've been thinking of auditioning for something since last spring. I was interested in taking on a new challenge in my life," Hall, an English professor at The Victoria College, said. "And I really wanted to work with Scott (Mohon). I enjoy his productions so much."
Directed by Scott Mohon, the play centers around manipulative psychiatrist Dr. Margaret Thorne Brent, played by Hall.
Set in one room in a home in a high-end Connecticut enclave for a period of a week, Dr. Brent is on the brink of celebrity when a secret from her past threatens to derail it, according to a theater news release. Playing bizarre psychological games with her husband and one of her fragile patients, the play goes beyond the traditional mystery play, Hall said.
"It's intriguing, suspenseful, strange. The audience need to pay very close attention," she added.
Joining Hall on stage is Johnny Vera as Dr. Brent's husband, W. Harrison Brent, Russell Fowler as Inspector James Ascher and Randy Pollard as a somewhat schizophrenic killer and patient of the doctor.
"They're all very good," Hall said. "Russell is very hot as the inspector. Randy is just crazy in his role and Johnny is oh-so-British. There's an odd quirkiness to all the characters."
As for why Hall was first attracted to her role, it's simply because she has a soft spot for deviants.
"Oh, Margaret is a total deviant. Most of the productions I've been in, I've played someone who is at least somewhat deviant. Bad girls are more interesting," she said. "I wanted a challenge, and I got one. I think this is going to be a great show."
"Perfect Crime," written by Warren Manzie, is New York's longest-running non-musical play ever. The Victoria production will run Nov. 13-15, and Nov. 19-21, at the Leo J. Welder Center. For more information, go to www.theatrevictoria.org.
