Fire: Electrical fire burned their Ben Jordan Street home in mid-June, but they hope to be back inside by Christmas

On Wednesday the De La Garza family met a predicament few face at the cash register. They needed to spend more money.

"Let's go back," Jennette De La Garza said, herding her four children toward Old Navy's children's sections as her husband Daniel followed close behind.

The Victoria family's home burned in a mid-June electrical fire and Old Navy offered them $800 in gift cards to help get things back on track.

It's all part of Gap, Inc.'s "One and a Million" program, said Mary Jane Magallan, the local store's pricing specialist.

Through the program, every Old Navy store nationwide received $1,000 to use however it chose, she said. When the store manager learned of the De La Garzas through a local church, Magallan said the staff knew where it wanted the money to go.

"This is something that hit home to us," she said.

It took the family slightly more than an hour to get its heavy-duty shopping out the way.

To make the job easier, they split up. Mom took 5-year-old twins Danyel and Jordan, while Dad took 7-year-old Mathew and 4-year-old Joseph.

And the two groups had distinct shopping styles.

The girls followed close to Mom, weighing in on what they thought about items, while the boys found themselves drawn to the footballs. A mannequin found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time as Mathew accidentally sent her tumbling to the floor.

The De La Garzas spent a grand total of $804 on clothes, ranging from T-shirts to blue jeans and even a jacket or two.

But that wasn't all.

Old Navy presented them with a digital camera to replace photos lost in the fire, an H-E-B gift card and gift certificates for two haircuts at Regis for mom and dad.

Incredible Pizza also gave them a free dinner Wednesday night.

Life after the fire has been a struggle, the family said, explaining they aren't the type of people who ask others for help.

"The hardest thing is being away from home," Jennette De La Garza said. "But we have a supportive family. It's good to have helping hands."

The family of six - along with their cat, Chata - has lived with Dad's parents since the blaze and said it's gone well. Nonetheless, Daniel De La Garza said he continues working on the home and hopes to be moved in by Christmas.

"It's been tough, but I'm blown away by what they're doing for us," he said.

As for Magallan, she said it felt good to give back and that she hopes to see the company do something similar in the future.

"It's really heartwarming to see their faces light up," she said. "I'm happy we could do so much."
