PORT LAVACA - A Port Lavaca man was violently assaulted and killed Thursday morning in his home, according to a Port Lavaca Police Department news release.

Carrol Fondren, 68, was found dead in his home at 514 S. Trinity St. shortly after 2 a.m., according to the release.

A neighbor called the police to check on Fondren. They were able to see him on the floor through a window.

Investigators observed signs of a struggle, according to the news release.

Port Lavaca police, Texas Rangers and Department of Public Safety Crime Scene Unit are processing the crime scene and talking to suspects, Police Chief John Stewart said.

Stewart would not say how Fondren died.

Thursday afternoon the entire 500 block of South Trinity Street was blocked off with police tape. A few neighbors appeared to be cooperating with authorities as they investigated the property, where at least two dogs were tethered to a fence.

Stewart said homicides are very uncommon in Port Lavaca.

Fondren's neighbors were shocked to learn that Fondren had been killed and in their neighborhood, where neighbors said violent crime is rare.

In May, a man was killed at an apartment on Holiday Lane, which is on the north side of town. Fondren lived on the south side.

His neighbors said Fondren was a private, churchgoing man who had few enemies.

Frances Flores, who lives on the corner of West Center and South Trinity streets, said she didn't know Fondren's name and would only see him as he passed by waving from his car.

"Hopefully, we find the person that did this soon and get them out of the public," Stewart said.

  • Texican, you could care less, or you couldn't care less? Just wondering.

  • Vakemp,
If you want to get, "technical" about misuse of English grammar, then you must put the question mark inside of your quotation marks and not outside. Do this before you shake the dirty end of the stick towards the Victoria Advocate. I could care less about what is written and about who, but I can't stand morons who sit there and criticize others behind a computer desk like an educated internet tough guy!

  • Cut the VicAd some slack. The point is the person or persons who did this need to be removed from the face of the earth. My prayers are with his family.
