GOLIAD - The seventh annual Goliad Flotilla is expected to draw more than 160 paddlers. Wilfred Korth, chairman of the sites committee for the Canoe Trail Goliad, talked about the event.
Q: How many paddles are done along the river?
A: The San Antonio River Authority and the Canoe Trail Goliad work to put on two floats down the Guadalupe River.
Q: What is the purpose of the flotilla?
A: We try to encourage people to use the trail.
Q: Do people come from everywhere?
A: Every year it's grown some. We send notices to all the organized paddling clubs. Anyone that has been part of the flotilla before, gets a special invite. People come from all over, Goliad, Austin, Houston, Rockport and Corpus Christi.
Q: How long is the paddling trail?
A: The average paddler takes two to 2 1/2 hours. It's only 6 ½ miles.
Q: Where do people go?
A: People show up and put in their canoe at U.S. Highway 59 at the launching site and after they load their gear they can park at the state park.
The state park will provide a free shuttle to where they put in the canoe or kayak.
Q: Will there be people assisting?
A: On the day of, the San Antonio River Authority will have crew to help during takeout and the Canoe Trail Goliad will have people helping.
Q: How many people are part of the Canoe Trail Goliad?
A: Around 30-40, still small community small group. One of the neat things the flotilla will have all ages from 80s to young kids.
Q: Do people provide their own canoe or can they rent them at the flotilla?
A: Most people provide their own. We have a new vendor coming from Austin that will rent them. Typically canoes holds two adults. There are some two person kayaks.
Q: What will canoeist and kayakers see?
A: I think it's pretty neat not a lot of development around. People will see a lot of wildlife. It's a very safe river, there aren't any rapids people have to worry about.
Q: Will members of SARA also be canoeing?
A: Some members of SARA as well as the Canoe Goliad Trail will be canoeing and kayaking this year .
