The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4146 of Victoria has set up a bank account to help families affected by the Fort Hood shooting, Thursday.

A flag outside the VFW flew at half-staff as Joe Talbott Sr., post commander, talked about the shooting.

"It was a tragedy," he said, eyes welling up. "It kind of blew by mind. It's something you wouldn't expect."

It is unfathomable to believe men who served their time overseas and have dealt with war have been killed by one of their own on U.S. soil, he added.

"It hits hard," he said.

Helping out the families is something the veterans at the VFW feel obliged to do, Talbott, Vietnam veteran, said.

Talbott hopes the general public will also help donate to the families.

"We need to help and support the families right now," Talbott said. "They are needing it bad."
