Football isn't the only sport

Editor, the Advocate:

When I joined sports in high school, I didn't join for the prizes and bragging rights. I joined to have fun and win. But as time passed I began to realize that the sports I played seemed a little overlooked.

I could never understand why the wrestling and cross country side of the locker rooms were plain and undecorated, while the football half was filled with shiny banners, glimmering letters and a flat screen TV.

You could tell hard effort was put into the items given. But why is it that my teammates, along with players in every other sport, work just as hard as the football players but receive nothing for their greatest efforts?

It makes me believe that because football has pep rallies and huge football games with cheerleaders and a band, that this makes football more important. I believe that every sport should have equality in admiration, and I understand it won't be as big, but anything would be better than nothing.

I hope that through this letter people will realize that football isn't the only hardworking sport in the world, and that others suffer the weight of training, just as they do.

  • Yes that's how it was done back in my day also. I hope by being a smaller student body we can go back to that. The cheerleaders and drill team should do it. We also need more pep rallies. Each group has become its own separate entity. We need more unity.

  • I hope the new schools have student body pep squads that decorate all lockers for all the in season teams. Where I came from its done this way. Here in VISD its no unity. Sad.

  • I am sorry but I did overlook that the cheerleader parents spend numerous hours raising money for their cause as well. Speak to your parents.......

  • Well Lorenzo, the Football Booster Club is who we thank for the things you mentioned that you've noticed in the locker room. These are parents of the football players that have come together and raised money for these items. Band also has a group of parents raising money for their items. You may need to form a booster club for your sport. It just so happens their are a lot of football players, so the parents unite and raise more money. We also have a group of moms, The Viper Moms who came together on their own to decorate lockers etc. It all comes from parental involvement. Its nothing against your sport.
