Improve Christmas in Victoria

Editor, the Advocate:

I am a student at MHS, and our teacher asked us to write a letter to our local paper on a topic of personal interest. I would like to say a few words about Victoria during the holiday season.

Each year we love driving through Cuero and Halletsville during December. It's so beautiful, especially the parks and courthouses. If you landed in the middle of our city in a starship during December, you'd never know it was Christmas.

Other than our churches and neighborhoods, there's not much going on. It would be nice to have some window decorating contests in the mall and/or downtown. I'd like to add one more comment: Our family is in favor of a city recycling program.

I recycle aluminum cans and other materials, but it's not much fun to drive around with your car filled with garbage. One summer, when leaving Schlittlerbahn in New Braunfels, we noticed blue tubes filled with empty milk cartons in front of each home. We briefly discussed the possibility of something like this in Victoria.

If the schools replaced the styrofoam food trays with plastic trays, it would save our city tons of garbage. We hope that one day our city will become a "green" place to live.
