This year, you can give Christmas cards while at the same time giving back to children in the community.

The Golden Crescent Court Appointed Special Advocates has partnered with the Victoria Art League to create the organization's first-ever Christmas card fundraiser, CASA interim director Tim Hornback said. The Christmas cards and notecards will be on sale at various local locations throughout the holiday season and all the proceeds will go to benefit CASA.

"Right now, it's all about collaboration among organizations. We wanted to do artwork and the art league wanted to work with another organization, so it worked out well," Hornback said. "This is our first time doing a Christmas card fundraiser and it's been a wonderful experience. We're hoping this raises awareness of what we do and helps us with the recruitment and training of volunteers."

Golden Crescent CASA is a nonprofit organization that trains volunteers to act as an advocate for child abuse victims. The organization serves 230 children in the nine-county region, but there are still many more children who need to be served, Hornback said.

On Sept. 19, 30 children who CASA serves attended an art class at the Victoria Art League taught by league president Neldene Matusevich to create the designs for the cards. Seventeen of the children's designs were used to make Christmas cards and another 10 were chosen for Christmas note card designs, Hornback said.

"I like to draw anyway, but drawing Christmas cards was like expressing yourself to other people and spreading the love of Christ, too," Katie, 15, said.

The children who created the cards ranged in age from 3 to 16 and had a blast making the cards, Hornback added. He said that he thinks the experience created some future pupils for the Victoria Art League.

"I loved working with the people because I got to draw and paint all sorts of stuff," Toby, 12, said. "I got to learn new ways of drawing and the ladies who taught us about drawing knew some awesome techniques to make our drawings look really cool."

The cards will be unveiled Sunday From 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the Victoria Art League building. The cards and notecards will be sold for a donation of $10 for a 10-pack of cards.

In addition to the selling of the cards, CASA will also auction the original artwork created by the children and all proceeds from the auction will go into a savings bond for the child, Hornback said.

The silent auction begins the evening of the unveiling and ends on Nov. 13 at the organization's Holiday Wine Pairing benefit.
