CUERO - Christmas will be a bit darker this year after vandals destroyed nearly $150,000 worth of lighted scenes in Cuero's annual Christmas in the Park Saturday night.
"It was pretty devastating to us," said Kay Lewis, president of the Cuero Development Corporation December Events Committee. "We all stood out there and cried because that's our baby."
Early-morning golfers discovered the vandalized scenes Sunday in the Cuero Municipal Park. A 30-foot lighted steel steamboat fixture was contorted; a 37-foot steel American flag fixture was submerged in nearby Cuero Lake; and a separate fixture, Sally the Sea Serpent, was in pieces. Her tail and a center piece were also found in the lake.
The incident comes just weeks before opening day, Nov. 23, but organizers are determined to continue.
"It's not going to stop us," Lewis said. "We're going to open as usual, on time, and it's just not going to have the riverboat or the flag."
Organizers are baffled as to how the vandals even moved the pieces and question the motive.
"We just don't know what to say," said Mary Polansky, publicity chair for the committee. "I think we're still in shock. Why would somebody do that? What's wrong with them?"
Polansky said this is not the first time the exhibit has been vandalized. Wednesday evening vandals crushed about 100 bulbs in a fountain scene and removed the head of a fawn fixture.
Lewis is hoping to offer a reward for anyone who has information about the incidents.
City officials will meet Monday morning to discuss further action.

Wonder if this could of been done by out-of-town kids? Just a thought. I hope they catch them, and I think the parents should be responsible for damages.
November 9, 2009 at 6:55 p.m.Community work for all of them. Redneckgirl, your Son will thank you one day for being a strict parent.
John, my ex roommate is a cuero cop. VPD passed him up because he flunked a spelling test on the computer. Their loss. and Cuero Cops do an excellent job.
November 9, 2009 at 5:29 p.m.For you who think this is the same as smashing mailboxes, which is wrong also, the cost of a mailbox is about $20, this caused $150,000 worth of damage. BIG DIFFERENCE! Like I said, I fixed the kids with baseball bats who destroyed my mailbox. I poured cement inside the box and left room for the mail. After that there was a dent in the side of the box, but it was the last one. Think it made some kids teeth rattle when the bat came to a dead stop when they hit it against the cement mailbox.
Also, if any of you think this is just having fun. Tell me how you would feel if someone "just got drunk and had some good ole fun " and did that much damage to your home or car, I bet you would be talking out the other side of your mouths.
November 9, 2009 at 5:20 p.m.Maybe the Cuero cops should be issuing more parking tickets in the park. That is how Victoria combats crime.
November 9, 2009 at 4:27 p.m.it was probably done by some good ol boys that had drunk a little too much! the same type that go around smashing people's mail boxes out in the country!
November 9, 2009 at 3:58 p.m.Thank all of you for your comments, they are very much appreciated. We are working on security and the police chief says that they do patrol the park every hour during the night. You all mean so much to us for your support for the past years. This is our 10th anniversary for Christmas in the Park and we will open on November 23, and look forward to seeing you all. It may take several years, but the flag and the paddlewheeler will be replaced. Mary Polansky, December Events Committee
November 9, 2009 at 3:23 p.m.I live in Cuero, I ask my son if he heard anything in school today about who did this. He said no, but he is going to try to find out. You know kids talk. They had an assembly and the city is offering $2500 if anyone can turn the people in who did this. I am sure there is someone who will start bragging about doing this, and the $2500 will help anyone snitch who knows anything.
November 9, 2009 at 3:16 p.m.REdneck girl, you keep up the good work. we need more prents like you and VISD wouldnt have the dropout rate that they do, Of course there are certain social groups that think that is the smart thing to do so that us working folks can support then on welfare and food stamps and medicaid when their gang activities are working so well for them.
I say look around Cuero for somekids with large truck and towing cables. this crime should be punished with a harsh punishment. restitusion as well as community service. Juveniles here in victoria go to municipal court to get the financial slap on daddys hand and when parents ask if the kids can do some service time, guess what., they cant cause no one can police it. I offered to pay the fine on the condition that my kid also do 500 hours of community service and I was shot out of the saddle. Thats ok, 500 hours of hell here at home. Hold your good parenting skills
November 9, 2009 at 12:34 p.m.My hubby was a sharp shooter and now he is ERT. He could shoot someone and then make sure they are ok. We have some tents. =D
November 9, 2009 at 11 a.m.I hope they catch the people involved, if kids were involved, then curfew for two years, the only place they can go would be to school, and for fun, picking up trash with their uncaring parents for two years might help parents be parents and kids not to be creeps.
November 9, 2009 at 10:44 a.m.In most parks the law abiding citizens are kicked out at 11:00... Maybe we need to invite some modern day minute-men to camp out in our parks after hours. Enter at your own risk.
November 9, 2009 at 10:43 a.m.redneckgirl,
Kudos to you! The idea of you holding his pants up all day at school is hilarious!

Permalink Thank you Lord for not giving me "redneckgirl" for a mother.
More kids need me for a mother, and a lot of this stuff would stop. I have never laid a hand on my kids, there are other ways to control them. The most important thing a parent can do is know what they are doing and whom they are doing it with. Then go take care of things, all of the school staff tell me they wish they had more parents like me. A parent who will take the time to come to the school and take care of things. BTW, N45BA, I have also went to school with my son and held his pants up all day as we walked to his classes, he NEVER sagged his pants again. He is adopted ,and he thanks me for caring enough to help him do what he should be doing, even if he does not like the way I do it. He was in 23 other homes, in Residential Treatment Centers 6 times and in Juvy twice before he came to me at age 13. He says now he knows he will have a life and not go to prison because I do care enough about him, and do not care what others think of how I go about helping him learn what he needs to do in life. So, until you know the reason I am strict, do not knock it. I have been to Hell and back with him, been to court and community services because of his school behaviors, but I refused to give up on him like the 30 others did. He says he finally feels as if he has a home and a mom, and he is so happy that I was strong enough not to give up like all the others did. And, BTW, I really do not care what your opinion is.
November 9, 2009 at 10:14 a.m.Not again, didn't this sort of thing happen last year and maybe the year before that? What a shame to have to consider paying for over night surveillance just to keep people from distroying such a magnificent yearly endeavor.
November 9, 2009 at 9:36 a.m.Another thought on this. If they catch the kids who did this, and most likely it was teens. They should make the parents also go to the park and repair all of this. I do not expect the parents to take off work to do this, but do it on their time off. Make the kids pay for the equipment by working for the county and city free, pick up trash, mow and edge vacant lots, etc. And, yes the parents should be held responsible for this also, they should know where their kids are. I am sure there will be a lot who disagree. The parents are held responsible for a kid skipping school. My son tried it one time after lunch. He does not try anymore after I went to school with him all day after I found this out. I made him hold my hand in the hallway, he could not talk to antoher student, he had to sit by me in the classroom. It sure broke him in a hurry.
As for kids having a good ole time, they need to be taught others ways to have a good ole time. I live in the country, my mailbox was destroyed only once. After the first time, I put a cement cylinder in it, and I feel sorry for the kids who drove by and hit it with that baseball bat.
November 9, 2009 at 9:13 a.m.i hope they find these people and throw the book at them. full payment for all damage too.
i love the idea of having them standing out there with signs, if they're minors. their parents need to be out there too.
disgusting !
November 9, 2009 at 8:58 a.m.I applaud the organizers who work so hard to raise the money and set up the displays each year. I'm sure it takes a lot of their time and other resources to give to the community in this way. I hope this doesn't diminish the pleasure they get from their efforts.
I'm sure they began this wonderful project knowing vandals would be a constant threat. It is a shame the hoodlums hold so much power over our communities. Only better parenting can change that.
November 9, 2009 at 8:55 a.m.People always say where are the parents? Well here is the answer... not around... Regardless.... accountability is the key factor. I strongly agree (and push for the judge that these people will hopefully and soon face) that the guilty have to face the public for what they did. They should be REQUIRED to greet/welcome the public at the park exit as people leave the display. They SHOULD wear a sign that indicates they were the ones responsible.(If they are minors...REQUIRE that their parents, who legally responsible for them, stand right next to them). They should also be REQUIRED to help fix what they have destroyed. THEY NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE! If these people are not held accountable for what they have done and do not see what they have done to the various communities around Cureo that enjoy this holiday tradition what could happen next?
November 9, 2009 at 8:42 a.m.Didn't you think after last Wednesday's vandalism, this may happen again. You would think that with all the hard work and money that goes into this each year, some sort of security would be included. I too, enjoy bringing my family from Victoria to see this each year, and would not mind at all a fee increase to provide security after hours. Come on Cuero, wake up! How many times does this have to happen before something is done.
November 9, 2009 at 8:41 a.m.It is wonderful to drive thru the exhibit for a small donation. But I would pay a dollar amount per car load if it were to comtribute to the cost of an off duty officer to protect the sights. Along with other families, we drive from Victoria to Cuero every year for the event. These kids that destroy things have no home life. They know the sights are unprotected. Parents don't care or are probably not home either. The vandals are getting another thrill from all the publicity they are getting right now. It's sad. We have a new little grandson who will never enjoy the river boat scene and have to be only told about it from his older brother.
November 9, 2009 at 8:28 a.m.This is really sorry! What is WRONG with people who think it's OK to do these things! ALL I can say is your time will come and are you really ready to meet your reaper when that time does come?! People like you are the ones who make it impossible for NORMAL people like myself to benefit from such nice things because there no longer available because you can’t find something better to do with you expendable time!!!!!!
November 9, 2009 at 8:27 a.m.I think they should start a curfew-at six o'clock- when the lights come on until day light. Then every parent whose kid(s) are not home can be held responsible. Make it a "heads up" type of situation.
November 9, 2009 at 8:09 a.m.SouthernGal---this is my question, where are the parents? Too many parents just allow their kids to do whatever they feel like doing, and they do not know if they are in their beds or not. They do not know where they are or whom they are with, and they do not care. I know this for a fact, because when my son ask if he can go some place with another kid, I make him give me the parents name and phone number, most of them think I am crazy when I call, so this rules out him going any place with this kid.
My son is 17; I adopted him two years ago. He thought he was going to do as he pleases, but he found out fast that he will answer to me for everything, and I WILL know where he is and WHO he is with at all times. In addition, I really do not care how he feels about this discipline, I tell him it is called "Parental Control", and that I do not need a remote to find him :). He calls me a stalker and a spy, and whines that other parents are not so strict. I just tell him, "You are mine now, so suck it up, I really do not give a hoot what other parents do, or allow their kids to do". When he first came to me at age 13, he got all excited when I told him there is only one rule in my house, but he sure got angry when I told him what it is. "There is only one rule in this house, I am the boss and you do what I say". I also tell him, "Life is a B and then you got one for a mama".
November 9, 2009 at 8:06 a.m.DISENCHANTED:
November 9, 2009 at 7:41 a.m.You got my vote! If I could vote on this, I'd vote as many times as I could! Apparently,
whoever did this, must hate their parents and what the meaning of these FANTASTIC DISPLAYS mean! I hope they get caught! Hey, if they got out there by vehicle, SELL IT and use the money towards replacement of the displays!
If these punks are found out before the display closes for the season...they should be required to stand with the volunteers and greet visitors as they leave with a sign that says they are the one(s)that vandalized the display...even if they are adult(s) or no matter what the "demographic makeup of their upbringing is". Double standards should definitely not be tolerated in this incident.
The choice to vandalize the American Flag display should be handled with even further punishment.
November 9, 2009 at 7:14 a.m.Makes you wonder if the parents know where their kids are late at night or do they care? This is very sad.
