EDNA - Grab your hat, your American flag and - of course - don't forget your chili bowl.

Organizers for this year's Texana Chili Spill are gearing up for the annual veterans ceremony, cook-off and rodeo events at the Brackenridge Main Event Center on Thursday through Sunday.

The new center has allowed the event to expand, said Karen Gregory, an event organizer with the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority.

"It's positively a great facility," she said. "I think it'll give something more to the community."

Organizers added weekend rodeo events and a carnival, something Gregory believes will help attract audiences.

"We have a lot of people doing a lot of different things," Gregory said. "We have a lot of people who come out because they just want to judge."

Judges are welcome to sign up Saturday morning. This year's categories are chili, barbecue, ribs, chicken and salsa.

Organizers are expecting 5,000 people. Campgrounds are completely full for the weekend as people from all parts of Texas come to the city for the event.

"They come from down south. They come from Houston wanting to get out of the city. People are looking for something fun to do that's family-oriented. They want to come to a small community to get away from the hustle and bustle."

The event is sponsored by the Lavaca Navidad River Authority, Jackson County Go-Texan and the Brackenridge Main Event Center.
