Editor, the Advocate:

The Victoria Television Group advertises that since they went digital their coverage area has increased significantly. They use this rationale to try and get more advertisers on board.

While this may be true, they fail to mention that we have thousands of people who are not able to get cable or just choose to go with satellite. These people are not allowed to receive Victoria local channels with their satellite because the person in charge of Victoria communications will not allow satellite companies to carry local channels.

That puts our city in the 3 percent category of U.S. cities that won't release their local channels to satellite companies.

This seems like unnecessary protectionism, and it makes our city appear to be 20 years behind the times. There are people in our surrounding counties who get "local channels" from San Antonio because Victoria won't provide this service.

Guess what? Many of those people visit or go shopping in San Antonio because they see the advertisements on their "local" channels.

If Victoria wants to grow and attract more residents, advertisers, shoppers and visitors, then VTG should work with our city and county governments to insist that everyone be given access to our local Victoria channels, regardless of who their carrier is!

Frank Cloutier, Victoria

  • i bought a flat digitial square antenna with a booster midline in the cable. its a rca. i got it at walwart for like $12-15. no cbs though. maybe if i had a mega booster. oh well. connect to av port and you got very nice local channels in 30 secs.

i switch the tv mode to av1 from satellitte to get fox19 and kavu clear plus like 5-6 other channels the local tv group puts out. i pay nothing.

  • I agree. My problem is that I have a satellite and can't pick up FOX digitally over the air....even with a top-of-the-line antenna. I live in the city limits...but apparently too close to some powerlines (about 100 feet). So, if I want to watch football on Sunday, I have to have both a satellite and a cable package. The frustrating thing is that if you look at the digital coverage map, I should be able to pick up this signal 100 miles away.

If you can't provide me with a signal inside the city, let me have the waiver.
