Victoria College followed one of the biggest wins in school history by drubbing Lone Star Cy Fair 93-69 on Wednesday.

It was the Pirates' third game in as many nights and it showed. Fatigue was a factor early on for the road-weary Pirates, who scored a season-low 39 points in the first half.

"We came out a little sluggish in the first six minutes, but we started pressing and that put us into overdrive," said head coach Jonathan Anderson. "It was that defensive flourish that sparked us offensively."

The Pirates had six players to score in double figures including Denzelle Stevenson and Jon Flores, who went for 17 and 15 points respectively.

Stevenson led Victoria College with 35 points and the Pirates took a 91-86 win over Texas Lutheran University in Seguin on Tuesday.

Anderson called the victory "an amazing win" for his program.

Ryan Nieto-Whitaker was the other Pirate in double figures with 24 points.

Victoria College (5-2, 3-1) will next play at Coastal Bend College on Monday.

  • A sanctioned team would be nice. Adding baseball and softball would be great for a feeding system for UHV. If UHV adds basketball then they need to take a look at a few of VC's players. I am glad to see they play here next Monday night. Let's all go out and show that Victoria supports sports in our community. If they become sanctioned maybe we will see more local kids play here close to home. GO PIRATES!

  • OK. I didn't realize VC was only club. How do they give scholarships? If so, that is a very big accomplishment. Now I guess the question becomes why don't they play under a sanction? I sure hope they add baseball and softball this year. I heard that they were. This will create an automatic piplene to UHV for these students. Isn't UHV adding basketball in the Fall?

  • Victoria College, a "club team", knocks off Coastal Bend College last night. Aren't they a NJCAA Division 1 program? Let me guess this was probally an exhibition as well. I think the school, athletics department, and coaching staffs at the school have done a wonderful job. Keep up the good work. Victoria should be excited at the possibilities Victoria College is bringing the community. Last night they had two very "BIG WINS" for the school. First of all the girls volleyball team hosted an area all-star game to help give back to the area and the Mens Basketball Program improved to 6-2. Way to go VC. GO PIRATES!!!!

  • I'm confused? VC plays fully sanctioned schools. They put players on scholarships and recruit kids from all over the state to play basketball and Volleyball for VC. What's this arguement all about? Isn't VC about to start a few other sports this Fall?

  • JackDuece - not exactly. Please let me clarify. I completely agree that if you want to compete, you need support from the administration. And I agree that there are many "organized" groups that don't get/need/deserve recognition as well. I think we are on the same page where that is concerned.

My question, however, is how do you propose to get the administration to "buy in"? If community support indicates interest, which in turn will get the administration to pay attention, why not have the local community paper be actively involved? Why does our local television station cover the games but our local paper does not? I do think it's great that the Advocate has printed the results from the last three games, but would just like to see more positive interest in things going on locally. If we want our community to expand, we need to support and nurture all facets. This is not about whether the paper should cover a club team versus a sanctioned team. This is about something new and exciting in the community that is once again met with resistance. Thanks for listening.

  • JackDeuce and Chris Cobler, I agree that for the team to become sanctioned, the basketball program needs the support of the administration AND the community. While the administration and community as a whole are supportive, the VC basketball and VC volleyball programs both need even more support and encouragement from the community. And, what better way to promote the teams and community than through coverage in the local paper? If the Advocate is the "go to" for events and happenings in the area, is it too much to ask for simple coverage of the games - times/location/scores? Not asking for much, even just a simple game schedule is better than nothing, something to help encourage interest to keep the program going and show the support of the Advocate. Beyond that, how do you propose to garner enough interest for the administration to "buy in"?

With that said, the athletic programs at VC are great programs to foster school and community spirit, bring more people to the area and promote and support athletics and education. The basketball program at VC is too promising to let it fall by the wayside as many programs/events/ideas do in our "community". Maybe a further look into the athletics at VC will reveal that this team is much more than a "club" team and acts as a sanctioned team without the official title. In agreement with BasketballFan101, "The community support could be a big push to move these organizations past the "club team" concept." Victoria as a whole has way too much potential to be the community that it is today.

  • I saw the game on wednesday and it was awesome. And I hate sports!!!

  • It seems that the college could legitimitely be a JUCO Sanctioned organization. Maybe some support from the community and "The Victoria Advocate" could bring college basketball and volleyball back to Victoria. The community support could be a big push to move these organizations past the "club team" concept. From what I understand, these students are getting some type of schlorship for their participation. So let's all help them out. Go PIRATES!

  • As I understand it, the Texas Lutheran Game was a scrimmage. Congratulations to the VC team, but we typically don't send reporters to scrimmages or to club games. I hope this helps explain our coverage. We send reporters out daily to cover a variety of local sporting events and athletes. For others, we take calls from the teams' representatives.

  • Brubaker rocks!!
I have always said we need to name a facility, building or road after him. Tell him thanks when you see him. Yes I am a fan of his.

He gave a lot of student athletes visibility when there probably wasnt any.

    Thanks Don!

  • It's true, Don Brubaker is present at every home game. And despite the weariness of the Pirates, another outstanding performance by the whole team.

  • I think it is amazing how "The Victoria Advocate" covers hometown news like this. Victoria College Club team went out and beat a NCAA Division 3 team last night and they get three sentences. The hard work and effort they are putting into this season is going un-noticed by their local news. The starting point guard is a local graduate that was a bench player on a great Memorial Vipers team. I find it hard to believe that someone in the sports department hasn't picked up on the success they are having this year. Maybe this post will wake them up from their desks and get them out into the community a little more. I guarantee you Don Brubaker will be there for their home game tonight. At least he has bought into promoting local sports and takes the effort to go out and cover them.
