YOAKUM - Police and Texas Rangers are investigating the assault of a 67-year-old woman in her home early Monday morning.
The victim, who lives in the 700 block of Forest Street, was taken to DeTar Hospital in Victoria for evaluation, according to a news release from Police Chief Arthur M. Rogers III.
Earlier this year, two elderly Yoakum women were assaulted in their homes. A 79-year-old woman was sexually assaulted, and a 66-year-old woman was attacked and robbed. Both women were leaving for church early in the morning, police reported at the time.
After hearing about the Monday assault, women in Yoakum say they are being extra alert.
"I'm more aware of my surroundings," said Joyce Grubert, 82. "That's about all we can do. I have an alarm system inside my house. I carry my cell phone with me all the time."
Maria Rosales, 74, does not open the door to strangers late at night, she said.
"I lock my doors when I'm not going outside anymore," said Rosales, who has lived in Yoakum for four years. "If somebody comes to visit me, I'll always call through the inside, 'Who is it?' Otherwise, I do not open the door."
Rosales lives near where Monday's assault occurred, while Grubert lives near where the second assault happened.
In April, the Rangers began helping Yoakum police with the investigation, a few days before a 42-year-old man initially arrested on suspicion of the assaults was released. DNA evidence cleared the original suspect, who was jailed for two months.
Police were in a meeting with Rangers and not available to talk about the most recent assault Tuesday afternoon.
