MIAMI, Texas (AP) — Fire damaged the only school in the Texas Panhandle town of Miami (my-AM'-uh) and forced classes to be canceled until Friday.
Supt. Donna Gill on Wednesday told The Associated Press that the fire was traced to an electrical problem in the school's concession stand.
Gill says an employee arrived before classes started Tuesday, smelled smoke and summoned help. Nobody was injured.
Gill put preliminary damage estimates at about $400,000.
Gill said the school, with 176 students, will have pre-kindergarten through 5th grades return Friday, in an area that was not damaged by fire. Sixth-graders through high school seniors are scheduled to resume classes Monday.
She says Friday night's football game between Miami and Amherst will go on as scheduled in Kress.
Miami is a town of about 575 people, located 75 miles northeast of Amarillo and near the Texas border with Oklahoma.
