Victor Dum is ready to spend more time on the road.
When he does, much of his time will be spent behind the wheel of a new refrigerated truck donated by Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to the the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent.
"With one truck, I was basically the back up driver. Now with two, I'll be out a lot more," said Dum, Food Bank operations assistant.
Valued at $85,000, the new truck will be officially unveiled Thursday during a ceremony at the Food Bank.
The truck came loaded with 12 pallets of Great Value-branded products and fresh apples.
The new truck comes at a time when the Food Bank is expanding its Retail Store donations program and initiating a Mobile Food Pantry program, said Dennis Brown, executive director of the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent.
"This will help us double, maybe triple, our retail store pickups," Brown said. "That means during the next three to five years, another million pounds of food we can distribute in the Victoria area."
Brown said the Mobile Food Pantry program will allow the Food Bank to reach "pockets of poverty" not served by soup kitchens, homeless shelters or other services.
The new truck also can be used in other ways.
"Earlier this year, the Texas Department of Transportation recently the 19 food bank members of the Texas Food Bank Network to assist with natural disasters. The new vehicle will also allow the Food Bank to fully participate as a member of this statewide Disaster Services Team," Brown said.
The truck in Victoria was one of 35 donated to Feeding America food banks across the country by the Walmart.
Feeding America estimates the new trucks will help the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent and 34 additional food banks to transport up 52.5 million pounds of food, the equivalent to 41 million additional meals, per year.
Since last November, Walmart stores and Sam's Club stores have donated more than 90 million pounds of food - the equivalent of 70 million meals - to Feeding America food banks, exceeding the company's goal and making Walmart Feeding America's largest food donor.
