The hills in Houston are about to come alive with the sound of music.
From Dec. 8-20, the beloved musical "Sound of Music" is coming to the Hobby Center.
Based on the lives of the real Austrian von Trapp family, the original Broadway production was written by the famous musical team of Rodgers and Hammerstein and opened in 1959, according to the official "Sound of Music" Web site, www.sound-of-music.com. In 1965, the musical was turned into a film starring Julie Andrews, which ended up winning several Academy Awards.
In addition to becoming an instant classic, many of the songs from the musical have become favorite standards, including "My Favorite Things," "Edelweiss," "Do-Re-Mi" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain."
Although several details were changed, the real story of the von Trapp family is as remarkable as the sweeping Broadway and film versions, according to the Web site. Georg Ritter von Trapp was a captain in the Navy prior to the Nazi invasion of Austria and he did eventually marry Maria Augusta von Kutschera, who was hired as a tutor for one of his seven children. The family eventually left their home for the United States after Hitler invaded Austria. There they became the The Trapp Family Singers.
Tickets for the production range in price from $24 to $99 and are available by calling 713-558-8887 or online at www.tuts.com.
