A 26-year-old Victoria man was sentenced this week to 10 years in prison for an April hit-and-run wreck that killed a construction worker.

Enrique Rosales, 60, was directing traffic at a Laurent Street construction site early in the morning of April 29 when he was killed.

Jonathan Luis Gomez was driving through the intersection of Laurent and Hiller streets at about 5 a.m. when he struck the Rosenberg man.

Gomez fled the scene, but he was arrested later that morning when officer William Bernard noticed his car had serious damage to the windshield.

Gomez pleaded guilty Tuesday to manslaughter. In exchange, prosecutors did not pursue the second count against him - causing an accident involving a vehicle.

  • So,
Since he was Latino he should have gotten a free pass? That is some pretty flawed thinking. People that pull the race card, IMO. seem to be the most racist of all. BTW take the caps off. We are tired of seeing you yell.

  • NO "HE" NEVER DOES ANYTHING WRONG IN VICTORIA,TEXAS, IF HE DID, IT WOULD NEVER BE CHARGED FOR IT. IF HE WOULD BE CHARGED, HE'D GET IT DISMISSED OR CHARGES DPOPPED!!!

  • John123,

re: "Construction zones" applies to certain traffic offenses (ex speeding).

I would dare to ask how many speeding tickets are issued in Victoria in any given month. My guess would be very low compared to other communities this size. I would also guess that traffic violations are not important to some, hmmm!

  • He most likely will do three or less. The men out there working on our roads and bridges should be protected, they deal with a lot of people that just want to fly through, never caring about the lives they are endangering just because they are late for work ect.. Everyone want nice roads, but no one wants to sit and wait in a construction zone five minutes to let these guys do their job. Does the advocate have the stats on this? Is this a common occurrence?

  • Who was the detective on this case? Glad to see this one gets some prison time as opposed to the other case that was in the VA who got 10 years probation. Good job to the detective and apparently this Officer Bernard.

  • Thumbs up to Officer Bernard. Great job to locate the suspect and suspect vehicle following the accident.
