MOULTON - A 63-year-old Moulton man apparently took his own life Wednesday as law enforcement officers attempted to arrest him on a child sexual assault charge.

Claude D. Sherry was found dead in the backyard of his home after officers from the Moulton Police Department, Shiner Police Department and Lavaca County District Attorney Investigator Frank Allenger attempted to serve a warrant on the Shiner case, according to a news release from the Lavaca County District Attorney's Office.

Sherry was a former soldier, known to have guns in his home, and was described by family members as a survivalist, according to the news release.

Lavaca County Justice of the Peace Fred T. Nieto Jr. ordered an autopsy.

  • I want to live,
    I want to give
    I've been a miner
    for a heart of gold.
    It's these expressions
    I never give
    That keep me searching
    for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old.
    Keeps me searching
    for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old.

    I've been to Hollywood
    I've been to Redwood
    I crossed the ocean
    for a heart of gold
    I've been in my mind,
    it's such a fine line
    That keeps me searching
    for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old.
    Keeps me searching
    for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old.

    Keep me searching
    for a heart of gold
    You keep me searching
    for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old.
    I've been a miner
    for a heart of gold

  • All of you don't know this guy obviously he drove a truck by the way not a suburban. Only God will know what happened and beings moulton has a J.p. that can't read or write how do you even know he was the one that took his life? We all know that the cops in moulton are trigger happy why else would they order an autopsy? The cops in moulton are so dumb they don't know what happened and it's all hear say never been proven that he really did this. Comming from a person who knows him and has been around him he is not that kind of guy to do such a thing I was around him when I was little and he has never looked at me in a wrong manner or has even tried to do such a thing. And yes he could survive in prison. Shame on anyone that can even make comments like that when you don't even know who the guy is. Mabye you like laws that are schisty.

  • Zorro, no offense, just a question. I understand your point because we are living in a civilized society, but if it was your child would you wish well to the person that did this?

  • I don't feel sorry for anyone, that commits such ugly acts against children, being that I once was a victim.By killing himself only shows, that he was guilty, and so he's better off where he's at or where he is going!

  • Some of you people would do away with the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the rule of law. A suicide always leaves the whole story untold. FYI: The purpose of the judicial system is to render justice. The purpose of a lynch mob is to subvert justice and render revenge. Lynch mobs are abhorrent to a just society.

I am disgusted when I see people basically support Sharia law.

  • He committed the 2 ultimate sins in my book. He would not have survived in prison, so took the easy way out. The father of the child probably had the same reckoning in mind.

  • A survivalist. Hmm wonder if he is the one that drives or drove the big hunting suburban that ran me off the road?
As for the story...justice is done. Nice cozy place in hell for people like him. Hell is far worse than our TDCJ's!
