GOLIAD - A 41-year-old Goliad man was charged in connection with the sexual assault of an elderly woman in March.
Billy Glenn Moore had been a suspect during the initial investigation in March, but DNA evidence recently returned linked Moore to the crime, according to a news release from the Goliad County Sheriff's Office.
Warrants were secured for Moore based on the DNA evidence, said Goliad County Sheriff Kirby Brumby.
The warrants, issued by Goliad County Justice of the Peace Sylvia Valdez, charge Moore with burglary of a habitation (with commission of a felony) and aggravated sexual assault on an elderly person, according to the news release.
Moore was already in Goliad County Jail on a separate burglary charge.
Moore was arrested in May in connection with a late April burglary during which he lost a shoe as he jumped a fence fleeing officials.
The arrest in Goliad, a recent assault of an elderly woman in Yoakum following two similar attacks there earlier this year and cases in Gonzales County, have officials looking for connections among the cases.
When the Goliad assault took place in March, District Attorney Michael Sheppard said the Yoakum assaults from January and February came to mind.
"We were suspicious of that and put Goliad law enforcement on notice about the assaults in Yoakum," said Sheppard, whose jurisdiction includes Goliad and DeWitt counties. "We don't see any connection between the Goliad and Yoakum cases.
Likewise, Lavaca County District Attorney Heather Hollub, so far, has not found any connection between the assaults in Yoakum and others in Gonzales County.
Hollub said her office has not been notified on any DNA matches that connect any of the cases. She also points out that in some of the cases investigations are continuing and some reports may not have been filed with her office yet.
"The case from Lavaca County has not been submitted to our office for review or prosecution, it is still a pending investigation," she said. "In regard to the Gonzales case. Gonzales police have a suspect in custody and we are working closely with them to begin the prosecution of that case."
