Name: James McClane

Age: 78

City of residence: Victoria

Current title: Retired loan collector

First job: My dad owned a Texaco, Goodyear, Ford business in Karnes City and he had a large Coca-Cola cooler with chilled water to cool the drinks he sold. My first job was restocking the soda water and keeping it cold. Once the first batch sold out, we chipped pieces off 50-pound blocks of ice for the cooler to chill the next batch. On Saturdays we'd be busy stocking the soda water all day.

What it taught me: It taught us to be on time and to be polite to people. We also learned how to make change and count it back to the customers. It was an interesting time.

My First Job is a new feature that highlights people's first - or wackiest - job and what they learned from the experience. Please limit responses to 100 words or less. Responses may be edited for style, content or length. A photo of the jobholder accompanies the feature.
