A 55-year-old Victoria man was injured Friday afternoon as he attempted to cross North Navarro Street and was struck by a van.
The man was crossing the 3500 block of Navarro Street when a Chevrolet Astro van, driven by a 47-year-old Victoria man, was turning left from the 500 block of East Crestwood Drive. The collision occurred at 4:46 p.m. in the far inside lane of Navarro, Officer Stephen Lang with the Victoria Police Department said.
The man didn't see the car and the driver didn't see the man, Lang said.
The pedestrian was taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro for treatment.
Traffic on North Navarro was shut down for about 10 to 15 minutes, the officer said.
The driver of the van was wearing a seat belt. No citations were issued, Lang said.

No pedestrians do not have the right to walk blindly onto a street and assume that vehicles are going to stop for them. Are parents not teaching their children to look both ways before they cross the street? Hello!! Personal accountability!!!

November 15, 2009 at 12:30 p.m.I remember as many have, years ago, not too much traffic, people were slower. Now watch out you might get ran over, people are in a BIG RUSH to nowhere! Seems like people have gotten there licenses from a cracker jack box! I wished the laws would change and make everyone renew their written test every 4 years, I really think that would make a difference. People seem to forget: Watch for Pedestrians, they always have the right of way!

November 14, 2009 at 6:19 p.m.Oh, boy now the petition will start to have a elevated walkway here, so that the walkers can cross safely....
November 14, 2009 at 6:05 p.m.One simply has to use their brain.
I have succesfully crossed 290, I-10, Hwy 6, and the southwest freeway(59), while walking along Loop 410 in Houston. I might add that the southwest freeway was very busy.
Times were a little harder then. Walking was my only means of transportation. I do not suggest this for an afternoons walk.
Navarro is quite calm.
