    When: Saturday from 5 p.m to 9 p.m.

    Where: MHS Senior Campus Gym

    Admission: $5

The Memorial High School French Club will host its second Save Darfur Benefit Concert on Saturday.

"It is to raise money and awareness for suffering people in Darfur," said Brin Winterbottom, the event's organizer, a who participated in the event last year. "I wanted to make it a tradition at our school. I decided to take it on and make it bigger than it was last year."

Several groups, including such the MHS Dance and Drill Team, Victoria Strutters Dance Team, Hip Hop Team and Victoria Ballet, will perform, as well local bands and single performers.

Other activities include face painting, a French bowling game, pie-throwing, cake walks and improv story telling.

Gloria Ballard, a Darfur Coalition supporter of Victoria, will speak on the commonalities between Darfur and the United States.

Last year, MHS raised $4,000. All proceeds go toward the Save Darfur Coalition in Washington, D.C.

  • GPTT,

Even if it does more harm than good?

  • "Let's help our people first?" ?

The poor, the needy, the ones who really need help- they are all "our" people. They may not be citizens of this country, but they are still hurt and desperately in need and if you have compassion for those here, then why not those there as well? These students have a fundraiser for an issue they care about. It should be applauded, not attacked.

  • Nothing wrong with wanting to help but I beleive Holly1 has it right. A good lesson to any young person who wants to help would be to see where their money actually goes when its given to charity. There are countless examples of massive amounts of money being given to charity and then having that money going into someones pocket. Any time you send money to a war torn country it rarely ever gets to those it was intended for. I hate to be negative but that is the unfortunate state of things.

  • Mom of two, that was what I tried to express. Instead of putting down young people helping, get behind this fine group of people who are trying to make a difference in the world.

  • It started last year as someone wanting to help Darfur. Thats it. No strings attched. So lets let them hold a fundraiser for who they want to help and adults stay out of it with ugly comments.

  • These students feel a calling to help people who are less fortunate and yet people come on this site to bash them. I say, "Thank you, young people, for trying to make the world a better place. I applaud your hearts and efforts."

  • Would like to see some of it used right here in Victoria. Does anyone know someone who could help raise money for a fence and playground equipment for a school with NO PTA? Parents won't even come forward to help :(

  • holly1..."with todays economic woes here lets help our people first!"

You just don't understand. The US has been declared evil and not worthy of help. We are only to be used as a cash cow to send money we don't have to people who don't like us.

  • Perhaps you have heard president Obama's foreign policy sloganeering, maybe only during his campaign if not since. One of his "big hits" he adopted from Susan Rice (who at the time was touted as candidate Obama's head advisor on foreign policy). Tell me if you've heard it, "In dealing with [fill in the blank] we have to employ some carrots and some sticks."

If it's new to you, listen for it. It is the president's favorite, and he's begun to apply it in all sorts of situations, not just in reference to international diplomacy.

Well, you see, to make a long story short, you my friends are the carrots...

  • Poor misguided children. Can they not see clearly enough the need in their own backyards?

Have they no sense of history and the interests that these "charities" usually serve?

    November 14, 2009 at 8:11 a.m.

  • I suppose it is relative. Even the poorest of poor here are rich in comparison to others.

  • I would think that it would be of more benefit if they held this to help our needy instead of sending it to darfur so it can be wasted by some corrupt warlord there. with todays economic woes here lets help our people first!
