Editor, the Advocate:
I have followed with interest the Victoria school district's struggle with the Texas Education Agency and the rating they have given us.
How can this agency, or anyone else in their right mind, give our school district an "academically unacceptable" rating? This is a black eye for Victoria and certainly gives a false impression of the quality of education for our schools. One of my brother's favorite "misquoted" parables is "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him jump in." The education process in Victoria is available for everyone; sometimes we/they need a little push.
I would like to offer a vote of confidence to our Superintendent Bob Moore and the rest of the school board for a job well done.
Academics don't seem to be the issue, but rather the lack of attendance and graduation. The issue, as I understand it, is not the fault of the VISD system, but of the parents. The parents of the "dropouts" should be the ones classified as "unacceptable" for not getting their sons and daughters to stay in school.
I feel the TEA should split its ratings - one for academics and one for attendance - and not lump them together.
I read where at least one student is now studying for her GED after her education was interrupted. This is certainly a step in the right direction, and I hope many more will follow in her footsteps.
How are the members of the TEA selected? Are they out of touch with reality?
B.J. Cornstubble, Victoria
Editor's note: The 15 members of the TEA board of education are elected to four-year terms.

And our member of the Board of Education is Mrs. Mary Helen Berlanga of Corpus Christi. If she were to hear from a few of us who share Mr. Cornstubble's opinion of their inane, politically correct policy, it could not hurt and might help.
