This semester, the Zeta Gamma chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society at The Victoria College inducted its youngest student on record, 12-year-old Charles Farrior.

Farrior, son of VC's technology services director, Andy Farrior, and wife, Debra, is taking calculus-based physics at VC in addition to other courses - online or from private tutors - such as differential equations, British literature and economics.

He qualified as a member of PTK this semester after completing 18 credit hours part-time over the past few years and maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5.

The Phi Theta Kappa organization is focused on the recognition and encouragement of academic excellence for college students attending two-year institutions. The organization offers students opportunities for personal growth and development through participation in leadership, service and fellowship programs.

The Zeta Gamma chapter's PTK induction ceremony held Nov. 9 in the VC Fine Arts Auditorium included many exceptional VC students committed to their own academic excellence. Part-time students also qualified this semester after PTK membership selection criteria were revised to include those who have completed at least 12 hours of coursework.

Former PTK member Michele Rohde of Edward Jones gave the keynote address, offering advice and insight into this year's PTK theme: affluence.

Comments

  • Um, we NEVER call it PTK. We are Phi Theta Kappa (ΦΘK) NOT Rho Tau Kappa (PTK).

    From ptk.org/chapters/resources/pdfs/crm4.pdf
    "Proper Use of the Name
The full name of the organization is the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Members of the organization should be referred to as “Phi Theta Kappa members” or “Phi Theta Kappans.” “Kappans,” “Phi Thetas,” or any other abbreviated version of the name are incorrect references. By the same token, the organization should not be referred to as PTK, as these are not the equivalent letters for the Greek words meaning wisdom, aspiration and purity. When abbreviating, the true Greek letters should be used (ΦΘK). Otherwise, “Phi Theta Kappa” should be spelled out."

  • I am impressed, it is a honor regardless of the age of the individual.
