Jury selection begins Monday in the trial of a man accused of murdering a 17-year-old boy in 2007.

Derrick Quintanilla was found shot to death in his girlfriend's home on Oct. 30, 2007. Sebastian Willie Mejia is charged with capital murder in the shooting death.

He's accused of shooting Quintanilla in the head, acting as a member of the Texas Syndicate prison gang, according to his indictment.

Mejia, 30, had children with Quintanilla's girlfriend's aunt, investigators said after his November 2007 arrest. The younger couple babysat for Mejia and his girlfriend.

Mejia has a lengthy criminal history, according to court records.

In 1998, he was convicted of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in Brazos County.

He was also sentenced to life in prison on drug charges in March 2008. An appeal is pending in that case.

Prosecutors are not asking for the death penalty, but if he is found guilty of capital murder, he would be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Jury selection begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Judge Robert Cheshire's courtroom.

  • Good question, further.

The DA just convicted highest ranking member in Victoria of the prison gang known as the HPL, the Hermandad de Pistoleros Latinos. He was sentenced to life, 80 years, and 80 years on three counts of engaging in organized crime. The trial was a week and a half long, and the Advocate didn't even mention it.

  • To set the record straight .. Sebastian is in jail and has been for the past 2 years. He had drug charges already against him, but was convicted while he was sitting in the county jail.
As far as "why" he murdered Derrick, no one will probably ever know the truth. I do know one thing, Derrick wasn't normally there at that house at that time of day. So, I'm pretty sure Sebastian was looking for someone else. Derrick was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Derrick was a good-hearted person and he will be missed by all those who loved him.
Sebastian will get what he deserves for taking an innocent life. His days of "getting-off-the-hook" for his crimes are over! And believe me, NOBODY will miss him.

  • This guy is out of jail so that there will be room to put dope smokers in jail. We have to make sure there plenty of room in our jails for offenders like marijuana possession and failure to pay traffic tickets.

  • So was he in prison when this happened? How did he get a life sentence & be out of jail, even with an appeal?
