Turkey Day will be upon us in a couple of weeks. Before you start planning your guest list and dinner menu there is one important item you need to complete: Send the parks department your entry form for the holiday lighted parade.
The parade will be in a new location due to construction in the downtown area. In fact, we may not be able to return to downtown Victoria until December 2011.
Until that time, the Parks and Recreation Department is working to make sure this year's parade is just as special as every other year. The Holiday Lighted Parade will be in front of the Community Center on North Street beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5.
The parade is limited to the first 120 applicants due to less room for staging of floats and other entries. We have filled more than two-thirds of our spaces for the parade.
Entrants will stage along Ben Jordan Street. The parade will begin at Raab Avenue and North Street. It will continue toward Ben Wilson Street. Entrants will turn right on Ben Wilson and finish by the Youth Sports Complex.
The deadline for entries is 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 24. Entrants will need to develop their float around the theme of "Unwrap the Magic" in order to be eligible for an award.
As always, participants will not be allowed to throw candy or hand out items along the parade route.
We are providing space for 20 food vendors. If you are interested, please call the parks office.
Entry forms for the parade may be obtained by calling the Parks Department at 361- 485-3200 or by visiting our Web site at www.victoriatx.org/parks/unwrapthemajic.asp. We hope you join us for this holiday tradition in Victoria.
Don't forget to mark your calendar for Christmas in the Park on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Riverside Park.
Doug Cochran is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Victoria Parks and Recreation Department. Contact him at 361-485-3200 or dcochran@victoriatx.org
