Victoria native Brenda Romano died Sunday during an effort to protect her family.

After walking out of a Houston clothing store she saw a man in a Range Rover hit a truck. Inside the truck: her daughter and two grandchildren.

Romano confronted the man about the fender bender, then stood behind the Range Rover as the driver tried to get away, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Instead of stopping, the driver backed into her, pinning her against the pickup. Paramedics took her to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where she died, the Chronicle reported.

"She went to rescue my daughter, and this fool ran over her," her husband, Richard Romano, told the Chronicle. "We can never get over it."

The Romanos recently moved from their longtime home in Victoria to Yoakum, where they planned to retire.

Police caught the driver of the Range Rover - 39-year-old George Theobald - and held him on murder charges.

Theobald has a lengthy criminal history and is accused of stealing the Range Rover, the Chronicle reported.

  • I think this is worthy of the death penalty

  • My heart goes out to the family of the victims. I know this scum bag and always knew he was one heartless monster. He bilked people who helped him and blackmailed anyone he oould. I am wrecked that this family ever crossed paths with him because he should have been caged up for the animal that he is.I just don't understand why he should be given any bail at all.

  • How very sad for the family to lose their mother, wife, sister, etc. this way. Only trying to protect her family. I heard that the daughter was also injured?? WHO wouldn't have done the same?? I hope they give him FULL punishment!!!! Until we start standing up to these "punks" it is only going to get worse!! God Bless the family of the VICTIM!

  • I spoke to Brenda only a few days ago at a local store. Little did I know that would be the last time I would see or speak to her. She was a wonderful, caring person and often talked about her family. She knew of my retirement and said she looked forward to hers and spend time with her family. She has been robbed of that goal. Very sad!
May God Bless her and the Romano family.

  • I say they drop him off at the Romano's house and let Mr. Romano (or his wife's brothers/sisters/parents) take care of the matter for himself.

  • What's really missed in this story is that the pond scum offender "Had a lengthy criminal history...." and was still on the streets.

    And NOBODY cares!

  • This was shocking. I know Mrs Romano and her daughters. She was a very nice woman and sad to hear such a thing happened to her. My thoughts are with her family.

  • Another low life pond scum that only takes from life and gives back nothing but heartache. Nothing we can say can soften the lost this family must live with. Pray God sends his angels to comfort them during these dark days.

  • it is unfortunant that such a tradgedy has happened to someone that was trying to protect her daughter and family from such a horrible person. brenda was a close friend, as was her mother and father, who i knew well. she will always be remembered as a trusted friend and business associate. i grieve for the family and will miss her more than she knows. she is truly a hero to me and everyone else who knew her for giving her life to protect her family. what else is there in ones life to give it up for your family. give um hell brenda. you were one sassy lady.
