MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — "A Christmas Carol" reaches a milestone at the Guthrie Theater this week.

The Guthrie opens its 35th anniversary production of the Charles Dickens holiday classic. Previews begin Thursday, with the play opening Saturday and running through Dec. 31.

Actor Peter Michael Goetz (gehtz) makes his fourth Guthrie appearance as Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser who says "Bah! Humbug!" to Christmas — until he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come.

The Guthrie began annual productions of "A Christmas Carol" in 1975. This year it's a new, 90-minute adaptation written by Barbara Field and directed by Gary Gisselman, back for his ninth consecutive year.

More than 800 actors have appeared in the Guthrie's "Christmas Carol" over the last 34 years.
