LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Opponents of Michigan's ban against racial preferences in public university admissions and government hiring told a federal appeals court that the law strips minorities of their constitutional rights.
Arguments began Tuesday in a lawsuit challenging the ban at Cincinnati's 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Civil rights groups and University of Michigan students, faculty and applicants say the 2006 ballot measure approved by voters is unconstitutional.
Supporters say the law reflects the will of the people.
Judge Martha Craig Daughtrey questioned whether it's fair to bar universities from considering race while giving preferential treatment to other groups, such as students whose relatives attended the school.
A district judge dismissed a challenge to the law last year.
