A 46-year-old man shot himself in the head and was found dead in the Victoria Walmart parking lot on Wednesday, authorities said.

The death was clearly a suicide, said Justice of the Peace Robert Whitaker, who did not order an autopsy.

Police were called to the parking lot about 8:45 a.m. after another person camping in the parking lot noticed a Ford station wagon had a hole in the back window, Lt. Jason Cross said. The man was found lying in the back seat with a gun in his hand.

Police also found a journal, with a suicide note, Cross said.

"He was very plain about how he was going to do it, and that's how he did it," Cross said.

Maine state police were looking for the man and had traced him to Victoria using his cell phone, Cross said. There were no outstanding warrants for the man's arrest, Cross said.

The man's name was not released because his family had not been notified of his death.

The story is updated on our website now. The man's name has been released. He's been convicted of sex assault and is a registered offender in that state.
Still no mention of new warrants for his arrest, though.

  • No, there were not outstanding warrants from Maine, according to police.

  • So, he had outstanding warrants in Maine? Do the police not check nationwide warrants or are just worried about state?

  • KCi - According to the Victoria Police Department, there were no outstanding warrants for the man's arrest. That being said, the Maine state police had taken the trouble to trace him to Victoria.

  • After a suicide a few years ago, I'll never forget what one relative said, "A permanent solution to a temporary problem". tnt88, yes, it is a selfish decision to commit suicide. I can't help but wonder if someone, somewhere in the last few days of his life could have helped him not to make this his final decision. So sad!

  • thinking about "The Myth of Sisyphus," suicide is the ultimate philosophical question...is suicide the only logical decision for our lives? does it make the most sense rationally to escape all the pain and suffering that is this world?

Re: tnt88's comment, I agree it's selfish, but we are selfish creatures by nature. We have to be to survive and we have to be to die sometimes too.

  • This is from the KAVU-TV website: "In running the mans plates, officers quickly realized that the subject was on the run from state police in Maine after being sought on charges of child pornography and molestation."

That account differs somewhat from the Advocate's story.

  • The holiday season is hard for some, especially if they are out of work, losing it all, but know one knows what drove this man to end his life. I think it is a selfish move if you have family that depends on you.
