Esther Johnson has a lot of faith in sock monkeys.
The popular handmade toy is counted on as one of the drawing cards to bring in shoppers to the annual Victoria County Senior Citizens Center Christmas in November Arts and Crafts Sale on Saturday.
"I hope we can sell all of them," said center volunteer Johnson, 79. "It's always been a good seller and we really need the money."
The center, which recently began a letter-writing campaign seeking donations, makes sure about 250 people a day get fed either at the center or through the homebound program that delivers meals.
Mary Kliem, 77, has volunteered at the center for 13 years and wants the public to be aware that the original sock monkeys are available at the center.
"Ours are actually made out of a pair of socks. They are not pre-fab," she said. "The mouth is not sewn on. It's the heel of the sock."
Kliem said one sock monkey maker, a woman in Beeville, tries to keep them in stock for the center.
"We ship her the socks and she ships them back to us. That's how we are staying in the monkey business right now," Kliem said.
Saturday's Christmas in November Arts and Crafts Sale also features $5 plates of sausage and sauerkraut to go. There is a $1 admission charge for adults. Door prizes and raffle drawings are also planned.
Debra Garner, the center's executive director, lauded the work of the volunteers, not only in preparation for the arts and crafts show, but year round.
"Volunteers are real important to the center. They save us money," Garner said. "Without them, I don't how we'd be making it."
And making it is utmost on the mind of Garner, who became executive director in May 2008.
"The honeymoon is over for me," she said, explaining that the center has had some grants and large donations cut back and lost a large benefactor who died.
"The economy is not good for everyone," Garner said. "My elderly are on a fixed income. A lot of my people retired 20 or 30 years ago and the economy was not like this. Their income is not going to get any better, but they want to stay independent and viable to the community."
Garner said seeing homebound seniors separate their delivered meal into "lunch and supper" portions reminds her of the importance of the work they do there.
"This is the only meal a lot of them will eat," Garner said. "This economy is tough on my elderly and it just breaks my heart."
