The Victoria area is very fortunate to have many dedicated individuals and organizations to assist those in need during difficult times. On Nov. 20, we have the opportunity to recognize the role that one of those organizations has played for the past 50 years. Devereux Texas-Victoria has been providing an array of much needed services to individuals of all ages who, without help, might not find care.

Devereux Texas-Victoria offers numerous programs to assist children and adults who have suffered abuse, or suffer from an emotional, behavioral, developmental or psychiatric disorder. The programs offered at Devereux Texas-Victoria are well designed and tailored to help those with specific needs meet the challenges that are brought about by everyday obstacles. The educational opportunities and life-skills training afforded to residents are the keys that allow an individual to pursue a life of independence and success.

Devereux, originally founded in 1918 in Philadelphia by Helena T. Devereux, was brought to Victoria by Dr. George Constant in 1959 and has continued to grow and meet the needs of more and more individuals every year.

With the guidance of Dr. Constant and a committed staff of 277, Devereux Texas-Victoria has served 5,279 individuals since admitting their first client. Many of these individuals came to Devereux as children and are now happy, productive adults. Devereux has an 87-percent success rate in helping individuals return to a more normal life.

The Devereux organization as a whole is a testament to what can be done by one person taking the time to look out for those who need special assistance to overcome the barriers that prevent a fulfilling life.

Here in Victoria, we have an abundance of those individuals, and their efforts have had, and will continue to have, a lasting effect on the lives of many people in the Crossroads area.

At some point in our lives, we all need support to make it through the difficult, emotionally trying times. For many, that support is provided by family, friends, specialists and others close to the person in need.

However, for a growing population, those traditional support resources may not be there, or they may not be enough to adequately address a complicated circumstance. This is why we should be grateful that organizations such as Devereux Texas-Victoria are there to fill the void that otherwise would leave too many Texans without the essential care that makes a difference when it really matters.

Our community is privileged to have an organization such as Devereux Texas-Victoria, with its caring commitment to ensure that all Texans can have a rewarding and productive future.

Devereux Texas-Victoria has been a cornerstone in our community for those in need of help, and should be commended for the five decades of service that have impacted the lives of countless Texans.

State Rep. Geanie W. Morrison represents District 30, which includes the counties of Refugio, Victoria, Jackson, DeWitt and Lavaca.
